want to cut springs have ???'s
I want to cut the springs on my truck to lower just because its cheap and my truck rides bad already. I would like to hear from someone who's already done this and also would like to hear the pros and cons to cutting them.

you can only cut fronts, i think its better than heating em..good luck ive never done it but may in the future

Back springs are pig-tailed....they wont have anything to retain them if cut.

you can make a drop block (i was going to do it but I couldnt find a longer u bolt for the life of me). Or a drop spring (100$). or torch em or bags

walk into any autoparts store with the measurements you need for ubolts and they should b able to fix u up

tried napa and they cant get it reasonably ($65) and orielly autozone etc autmatically says 'no'

believe it or not the rear springs on my wife's 67 are cut, and my buddy did it to his a couple years ago so it can be done

The fronts are easy, pull them and take a cutoff wheel and cut one full coil off. Slap em back in and go cruise. Check to see if your stock shocks are going to bottom out or not as well. Some guys cut 1.5 coilsoff and say they have not had any issues, but they come out easy so start with one coil and see how you like it. You can always cut more off, but once it is cut...its cut. To tell you the truth, my truck feels better in the front after shortening my springs. But that may just be me.

I just cut the fronts on my 3/4 ton and they are a bit different, I cut 1.5 coils and got about 2.5". They are a lot tighter fit then the 1/2 ton ones, if I didn't cut them I wouldn't have been able to put them back in without a compressor. Even with the cut coil it was lifting the truck to get the ball joint back on. Oh yeah the ride seems about the same in the front, I lowered the back by pulling out 4 leaves so it rides smoother than before.

cut the front one full coil and for the rear get a set of springs from the junkyard off of a jeep and it will drop it four inches in the rear...

OK, so you can cut the rear springs...but in the pictures I saw, there's nothing holding them in place...can anyone honestly tell me it's ok to drive the truck with nothing holding the spring to the frame? I realize the bottom is held in place....

Just don't do it, there are right and wrong ways to do things and that is not right/safe in my book. Kind of like there are two way to see if a gun is loaded, you can look down the barrel (Cutting rear spring) or you can pull the slide back and see if one is chambered (Drop springs)

The top portion has the weight of the vehicle resting on it (est 500-750lbs directly above the upper mount) much like the front springs. The vehicle would have to become fully extended for there to be a concern. Even if that happens, those shorter front drop coils that arent held in place by any hardware (top or bottom) can fall out or become dislodged while the rear is held in place. Yes, very short coils up front can fall out if you hit a good sized dip on the highway @ speed. Very short = dropped coils w/an additional amount removed or stock coils w/more than 2 coils cut. If & when that happens, the vehicle will suddenly drop on that side; the alignment will suddenly be way off resulting in immediate steering issues, & that spring is now a projectile that's possibly going somewhere (steering linkage, ricochet off the bottom of the vehicle, fall off & hit another vehicle, etc....) The better choices vs. cutting the rear springs would be building your own lowering block for the rear (or buying some); buying some used drop springs from the classifieds section, or swapping in bags (shorter installed height vs. load capacity). The better choice for the front drop is mild drop springs combined w/spindles or c.member changes.

just to say:i agree on it not being the best way of doing it cutting the rears, we plan to buy her a quality lowering kit, the truck is not being drove now anyways i have the doghouse off it and rebuilding the motor that is just some of the crazy stuff the owners before me did to this poor truck
