Carb question

I've got a question for you guys. Recently I bought an Edelbrock electric choke carb. It runs great. The problem i'm having is that after I turn the motor off and wait 15min it is really hard to start. I have to step on the accelerator and leave it wide open to start. It runs rough for a couple of minutes and a plume of smelly "gas" smoke comes out of the pipes. What can I do to fix it?
