How'd water get in here?
I'm updating from drums to discs from the 98-02 camaro. Found out that they will bolt on to my 10 bolt rearend. Found a good deal on a set on Ebay & got them in yesterday and started disassembly of the rearend to remove the axles. When I removed the differential cover I was shocked to find that the oil was a thick sludge mixed with water! Any ideas where that came from?

Sounds like the diff was submerged in water and it came in through the vent hole. It could have been a victim to flooding.

Re: How'd water get in here?
Of the oil and water are separated it probably sat out in the rain, probably coming in through the vent. If they are really mixed the oil will be thin and look like coffee with a lot of cream, which means the water got in and the oil got hot.
Pull the axles and check the bearings for rust or damage, which should be done with any used differential.

Re: How'd water get in here?
Its not uncommon to find a rear full of water. Most of the rears I get from sitting trucks are full of water/muck/sludge. If it sat for a while prior to you getting it thats where it came from or someone filled it will heavy grease and 90w to quiet it down and it collected the water as time went on.
