Truck dying

I have a problem with a 72 c10. I will charge the battery and it will start right up and i'll drive it around and then i will turn it off and try to start it agian but the battery is dead. Ive checked the alternator, its fine. Ive checked the battery, its good and ive replaced the voltage regulator. Any thoughts on what the problem is?

Re: Truck dying

To start, what exactly is "dead" no crank from the starter? Have you tested the voltage out of the alternator? How about the condition of the battery cables and all grounds? Are you sure the regulator is working, just because its new doesnt mean it works, I have fell victim to that before.... I would also check all the wiring into/out of the voltage regulator and alternator. I had a faulty starter that would "overheat" when driving and wasnt able to restart the vehicle if it was too hot, maybe a bad/weak starter?? Sorry just throwing all that I can think of, someone else will chime in as well... Good luck

Re: Truck dying

If it were me, I would put my voltmeter on the battery and check voltage with the engine running. Should be more than 13 volts. If not, then the alternator or regulator is suspect. Also, make sure all battery cables/wires are clean and tight.

WHILE IT'S RUNNING, UNHOOK THE POS. TERMINAL ON YOUR BATTERY. IF YOUR ALT. IS O-K IT WILL PRODUCE ENOUGH JUICE TO KEEP IT RUNNING. JOHN

Re: Truck dying

Removing the ground cable from the battery while it's running is a good test but not recommended.

I've done it in the past but after I read what can happen if there's any kind of a spark I'm not going to do this anymore. My brother-in-law almost lost his eyesite when the battery exploded.

The best test is with the voltmeter across the posts. But again, be careful.

Regardless of how new the parts are - and these days one never knows- the battery should stay charged if the alternator/regulator are working properly.

NOT THE NEGATIVE.... THE POSITIVE. THE BATTERY CANNOT EXPLODE IF THE POSITIVE CABLE IS UNHOOKED. WELL.... I GUESS ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE... BUT THE ODDS ARE BETTER FOR A SATELITE TO COME CRASHING OUT OF THE SKY & SQUIRSH YOU LIKE A GRAPE. JOHN
