Dana 44 rear
I had a 68 swb step side that was originally an inline 6 with a 3 speed column shift back in high school. I had swapped it over to a 350/th350 but the rear end was stock. I didn't know much back then about axles but I know this had 3.90s from the factory and I put in a set of 3.07s. This would mean it was a Dana 44 rear, correct? My question is what years and drivetrains was the Dana 44 put in. I have wondered this for years now and never have been able to get a strait answer. Here are a couple pics just for fun.

The only ones that I have found with the Dana 44 rears are the GMCs, all of the Chevies had 12 bolts except the big block 1/2 tons had Dana 60s. WES

Well...I'm positive it had 3.90s originally and then I put in 3.07s (NOT 12 bolt 3.08s) so what axle would that be? I am also pretty sure this was the original axle to the truck.

The truck 12 bolts are 3:07.1 Alot of people call them 3:08.1

You directly stated that you "didn't know"(it has been bothering you for years) and then backed it up by "guessing" what axle it had by what gears you put in it? There are several different rear ends that could have been under a '68 model truck. Some of those would be eliminated by the "short bed" and the "I6" but there are still a couple of possibilities. A simple "picture of the cover" eliminates all doubt. I only said cover because there have been posts here asking that same question and they post a picture of some casting numbers or tube stamping numbers....when a simple picture of the cover......

My 68 has a Leaf spring dana 44 in it out of a 67 GMC and it has 3.07 gears in it . I hope this helps ya out ..
