surface rust
It's was a hard winter. A couple feet of snow, and about half as much salt. I have found some surface rust popping up and wondered if i could just sand it down by hand and use some of that touch-up paint from local auto store to hold it off or would i do more harm than good? I know I am fighting a losing battle but I don't have money to repaint it now. It's not in a highly visible area. Help please!

this is being moved to the body and paint section. I would think that its worse than it looks and the half baked repair is to grind the area as clean as you can with a grinder then put the rust treatment on it and filler then prime and paint and that will help it some but its rusting form the inside out and will need a cut out and proper repair before long
