Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
I need pics of how the collector hangs at the bottom. If anybody has pics from the side or underneath that would be great. My truck is going to be lowered so i just want to see how low they hang. Thinking of getting the black painted ones from summit for $196.00 and then having them coated later on when i have more money. I really like the Doug Thorley's but the are a bit pricey and they don't hang to low from the pics i have seen, not like the Hedman longtube pics i have seen. My truck is going to have a 4.5-5" drop in the front with 255/60/15 tires depending on whether i use 2" or 2.5" drop spindles. I really want to run long tubes and not shorties.

Re: Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
Thanks sleepertruck72 they look like they sit about even with the control arms and front crossmember. Did you have any fitment problems? My plans are 15x8 rally's in the front with 255/60/15 tires and 15x12 rally's in the rear with 29x15x15 MT Sportsman S/R. I can thank prostreetc-10 for that lol. After seeing his truck i want a similar setup.

Re: Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
These are pix as I was taking the tired engine out. The headers don't have much wiggle room between the starter, frame, and clutch linkages.
Tires won't be an issue. But putting these in require following the instructions. I spent more time trying to figure out the short cuts, then I realized the boys at Hooker have been to this rodeo before. (And I was just the clown!) Good Luck!

Re: Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
Thanks LMN8UR i only listed the tire sizes so everyone can get an idea on the stance the truck is goin to have. You wouldn't by any chance have any pics of how the collectors hang at the bottom do you.

Re: Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
If you can swing it, get the ceramic coated ones right off the bat.
1. You don't have to remove them later and wait for them to get coated 2. They get grungy pretty quickly. Unless the price of getting them coated includes stripping them for prep, it will be a real PITA later 3. You won't have to install them again. I chose the same route as you - get them now, coat them later. I really wish I had gone the coated route first. I've RR'd these more times than I care to admit and while it's not hard, it's just a pain. Just my 2 cents, install them once and forget about it.

Re: Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
I was going to get them uncoated cause i have heard that hookers coating is pretty bad and rusts thru pretty quickly but i did find that i can order the hookers straight from jet hot with their coating on them. Might go that direction.
On a side note my dad has some old cast iron manifolds off his 94 GMC 350 would I be able to use them to break in a cam on my 350. I have a GM 350/250 crate motor i picked up off a buddy for $400.00. This is the other reason i was going to go with uncoated headers cause i can't break a cam in on coated ones.

Re: Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
First, why do you need to break-in the cam? Did you change the stock cam? Second, why can't you use coated headers?

I'm changing the cam to a little beefier cam i like the way your truck sounds with the xe262 might go in that direction. Not going to go to radical yet with the stock heads. I saw that you have a GM Crate which version do you have and did you change your valve springs with the cam or use the stock ones. Every company i have read whether it be Hooker, Hedman or even Jet-Hot all said that the cam can't be broken in with coated headers. The break in process produces more heat than normal and will ruin the coating. You also lose any warranty you have on the coating. I was just going by what i read.

Re: Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
OK, Gotcha.
I have the 260hp crate engine. I wanted to go with the XE268 cam but the guys at COMP CAMS said I would defintely have to change valve springs with it. They recommended the XE262 if I was gonna use stock springs and stock converter. They still recommended new valve springs with any cam bigger than stock, but they would be ok with the XE262. I also added COMP Magnum roller tipped rockers, and a double roller timing chain. I need to get some poly-locks for the rockers eventually.

Re: Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
Oh ok thats the same crate motor i have, jegs lists it as 250hp and summit lists it at 260hp lol. I was thinking of going with the comp magnum 270h k-kit with the new springs, retainers and double roller chain. Also plan on running a 2000-2200 rpm stall and a turbo 350. Should make a nice little combo. I already have a Performer RPM manifold and a 600cfm edelbrock. Might upgrade the carb as well to a 650 demon or 670 street avenger.

Re: Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
Cool deal, man! That should make for a nice combo. I recommend the Holley 570 Street Avenger carb. You still wouldn't need the 670 unless you upgraded the heads.

Re: Need Pics of Hooker Comp SBC Long Tubes
Yeah i want to down the road after i get the truck built updrade to afr 180cc street heads, but that is way down the road lol. I'll probably stick to the edelbrock 600 until i upgrade heads.

sleepertruck,
What exhaust system are you running with those headers? Is it a bolt on system or are some mods required? |
