Charging system Problem

i have a 62 chevy 4x43 i pput in a 283 and I am having trouble with the charging system, I put in a new solid state regulator and a new alternator, I have checked all of the wiring, tried 2 alternators and 2 regulators no charge. i had the new alternator tested tonight just to be sure it tested fine, any suggedtions from you charger gurus, thanks, Larry

Just taking a stab. Is your regulator grounded to the firewall?
Ground straps-
Engine to frame, big.
Batt to frame, big.
Engine to firewall, small.

Recheck those, put some vaseline on the ends, use star washers as necessary, get 'em clean, clean, clean!
And you know you have to get the RPMS up a bit above idle in order to begin charging, right?
Did you have a Generator in that '62 originally? If so, then you need to reverse the leads on the Ammeter. Or do you just have an idiot light? Need some more info. One wire Alt? Generator originally? Is it the gauge that's showing discharge? Or a test light?
DON'T polarize an alternator!!!
After rereading-- I assume this is a 2 or 3 wire Alternator. Any reason not to go with a 12SI one wire? Nice and simple.

I have a one wire alternator maybe I'll give it a try but I'll check the grounds first, thanks for the help, Larry

I tried everything with the solid state regulator and the new alternator, no good, so I put in a one wire alternator i had and removed all of the regulator wiring, it works great, I still think even with the solid state regulator I needed to charge the field, cheers, larry
