Compressor questions

I'm narrowing my choices for air compressors, and I have a few questions:

Viar has the 480 and 444 compressors, and the 444 is cheaper. I've heard good things about the 480s, are the 444s any good?

I have heard that Air Zenith compressors are super-fast, but have also heard that they can be unreliable. Are most compressor issues usually related to poor design by the manufacturer or because most guys don't put water traps in their systems and the compressor fails due to water in the system?

Right now, I'm leaning towards the 480 twin pack ($399). I've heard good stuff about them.

Re: Compressor questions

I have never heard anything bad about Air Zenith so I can't help you there. I do know that many of the industry experts highly recommend the ViAir 380 as their first choice.

Re: Compressor questions

ive ran the viairs 350's, 380's,400's, 450's and 480's. The 480's are the best overall IMO, however the 380's have way less amp draw. 150 psi on the 450s and 400's isnt enough for our trucks but i was happy with them on my mini truck that ran lower psi, and smaller bags
the 444s are cheaper because they do not come with pressure switch nor relays or wiring accessories. Im about to run them to replace a customers set of 380's. he'll let me know what he think after im done this weekend

Re: Compressor questions

We sell a ton of comps. And we only do Viair and AirZenith. Both are great companies and have great products.
The AZ comp is gonna have the highest CFM rating of all the single compressors that we sell. However, for the price, I would personally go with the Viair 444 combo. True it does not come with a pressure switch or relays, but those are pretty cheap. Also, the 444 comps are the same price as the 380's, but they pump out the same CFM as the 480's.

The main thing i didn't like about the 444's was the leader hose size. seems like they are going to be working harder pushing through a 1/4 hose rather than a 3/8's leader like the 480's. I dont know if im just being paranoid.
I would just get viair 480's for an all inclusive kit. I just used the 444's because the truck already had all the wiring on so the price was right for him, and he has a 2 alternators to keep up with the demand. If your trucks electrical system isnt up to par, a 480 dual pack will eat up your juice.
But, viair is known for putting out quality, and i think they are a better bang for the buck over air zeniths
