Hey guys I got a friend who wants me to put power steering.I will use a gear box from a 72-76 truck.
He has inline 6 cyl. What pulley system and pump have you used?
Any input will be greatly appreciated

what size 6 cylinder? 250? 292? the brackets from the factory are different. 292 brackets are rare and expensive....I recently posted my installation of my 292 bracket.

What pump assembly to use depends on which 6 cylinder engine it is. Is it a 230/250 or a 292? the 230/250 power steering pump brackets and pulleys aren't too hard to find. However you don't want one from an integeral head engine. The ones for the 292's are rare and hard to find. One member here recently paid $400 for his 292 pump assembly. BTW you can use a power steering box from 1969 thru 1987. However the '81-'87 boxes have metric with O-ring fittings. So you will want to get a box and pump with the same style fittings to make it easier.

Hey don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but i'm also very interested in this. I have a 64 shortfleet with a 230 in it and i'd also like to install power steering. Been wondering if I'll need to find a 230 in a boneyard and pull the brackets/pulleys/pump off or there is a more readily available way to do this?

probably a dumb question, but how do you know if its an integral head engine?

thanks for any info on this.

The integeral head engine is where the head and intake manifold are one piece. They started this somewhere in the '80's. The 230's are the same externally as the 250's. So you just need to find a 250 with power steering. Seems like Nova's are a popular source for those. Don'r forget craigslist and also the classifieds here on the board. The '67-'72 classifieds here sometimes have the 6 cyl power steering pump assemblies for sale.

Looks like a 292 to me. Taller side plates and fuel pump behind the mount are the clues. Good luck on your search.

I would say that one is for a 250 6 cyl.

Thanks Kevs for the link! All I really need are the pump brackets. Not sure about his price either, don't know what they are going for. I'm going to be using a metric pump from an 87, so it probably wouldn't work with my gearbox anyway.

All you have to do is unscrew the adaptor from the back of the pump and replace it with a metric one. Watch out when you get near the end as it is spring loaded.
