im in the process of putting power steering in my 65. does anyone have pics and details on how to cut and reattach the steering shaft. what is the best way. is welding required or a ujoint. thanks

The search feature is pretty good. I did a general search of this forum using the keywords "power steering conversion" and got this thread and a whole bunch of others.

Here's mine.

I cut the end off a 68 and newer shaft. It's hollow and slips right over the end of your earlier shaft once you cut the end off it. Bolt it to the steering box and weld it thoroughly.

Later model intermediate shaft...

Cut end off, bead blast and drill holes around it for plug welding...

Slide over your cut shaft end, align to center steering wheel and weld the hell out of it.

I have done several 1/2 ton & 3/4 ton, 2wd & 4x4 power steering conversions, so let me know if you need some technical support.

ive never welded before and im not about to start on my steering column.so is there another option? complete column swap, if so what vehicle and year. something that will bolt on with minimal mods if any. im a newbee and on a tight budget. (junkyard budget). thanks

Use the bolt method or shear pin method per the original link. Don't weld your steering shaft unless you are a certified welder like Tex.

Tex, By the way, I think I would have just used the plug welds and not welded the top of the shaft. If your shaft broke it would be at the top weld, the then plug welds wouldn't do any good.

CPP requires you to cut the stock shaft and weld it back together using a sleeve which is included in the kit. For what the kit costs, I would have expected something better, like a replacement shaft of the correct length.

If I am going to have to weld the shaft, I prefer Firefighter's solution.
