700r4 seal question
My leak is getting worse and I have read as much as I can find on replacing the front seal. I feel pretty comfortable with removing the tranny but I haven't much info on actually replacing the seal. Is it as easy as prying old seal out and putting new one in? Do you have to remove the pump or not?
Also I just replaced the filter and pan gasket is there any thing else I should replace while it is out? Thanks for the help |

Be carefull when prying the seal out, you dont want to damage the pump bushing. Inspect the bushing for wear & damage, If it is damaged it needs a new bushing & will require removing the pump. If the bushing is good proceed with installing the seal using red loctite on the outside of the seal (700R4s are known for blowing pump seals out, using loctite is cheap insurance) All other seals can be done with the transmission in the truck. Re: 700r4 seal question
It really is that easy. Once the trans is out, pull the converter out. Remove the old seal, and tap the new one in place. When you put the converter back in place, make sure it is fully seated, or you may have trouble getting the transmission back in place. You will notice two tangs on the converter snout, it is imperitive that they are realigned back into the pump. There will be two sets of splines that you will feel line up, then the tangs in the pump. Just spin the converter with a little pressure from the front, and you will feel them engage.

Re: 700r4 seal question
Thanks for the quick answers. I am trying to replace what I can myself ,the shop said to pull it and reseal it would run $500. It shift and drives perfect so if I can get another year or two before a rebuild with a $6 seal I'd be a happy man. If this doesn't get it it's off to the shop.
Thanks again |

Re: 700r4 seal question
Some of the 700s have a front seal retainer.

Re: 700r4 seal question
Just wanted to say thanks again! I just finished cleaning up after about 5 hours laying on concrete. But after 10 miles no sign of the leak so if it holds up it was worth it, fingers crossed. I need a nap...

Re: 700r4 seal question
Most 700R4 don't leak at the seal. It's the brass bushing that leaks. If you find that the bushing is not leaking, replace it anyway. It will be good maitenance.
