MY 1959 GMC Fleetside (i think)
New to this forum so excuse my ignorance, My buddy gave me a GMC pickup that we think is a 1959 Fleetside but I'm not 100% sure of the year because he miss placed the title/registration. I have a few questions for the experts.
(1) how can I tell exactly the year? (2) Don't know if engine is good (st 6) should i rebuilt it or get something new? (3) I would like to keep the truck as original as possible, where would i get the most bang for the buck? Side note: the painting and bodywork is all being done for free. |

Re: MY 1959 GMC Fleetside (i think)
4 head lights 58 or 59.
Fender and hood trim like this = 59. "Napco" trim on front fender behind wheelwell, bonus original 4wd conversion.

Re: MY 1959 GMC Fleetside (i think)
He actually had given it to my other buddy that has a towing company to scrap it, luckily he misplaced the title or reg. so he couldn't scrap it. Now the problem is that i never even changed my own oil, so this is I think way over my league. Plus I just noticed today that this truck is a 2 stick manual tran. The only thing that is giving me hope is that my other buddy that works at one of the top body shops in the country agreed to help/do all body work including paint for (FR$$)

Re: MY 1959 GMC Fleetside (i think)
2 stick manual? the other one must be the transfer case shifter.

Re: MY 1959 GMC Fleetside (i think)
Sounding more like a Napco. Any chance the tranfer shift and case are mounted like this: (thanks in advance to bajabob for letting me borrow his photo)

Re: MY 1959 GMC Fleetside (i think)
Not a napco conv. transfercase, looks like a NP205 conversion. Third lever might be for a pto winch doesn't look like the transfer has a twin stick set up. Has the body man doing the free work seen the cab??

Re: MY 1959 GMC Fleetside (i think)
The body guy did see it, we have to replace some metal but overall the truck is solid. it might have been a Napco but we noticed that the front axel was changed cause the shock placement don't match up and therefore are no longer installed neither is the 4x4 connected. Maybe whoever had the truck b4 replaced the parts on the cheap or whatever they could of gotten their hands on.

Re: MY 1959 GMC Fleetside (i think)
I thinks its similar to the front end in my truck, the build thread shows how I delt with the shocks. Also, you will need to replace the stock box, I ran mine like that but the box can't take the stress and eventually wears out. Newer truck power steering boxes will mount up in the same location. Can't wait to see the build.

Re: MY 1959 GMC Fleetside (i think)
If driving and enjoying that experience is the primary goal you can always get a running truck for less than redoing one of these. For some its the journey, for others the destination.
