Question about 2-1/2 ton axles
I came across a guy that has an old military truck, 6 wheel drive that he's willing to sell. It runs but the tranny is busted he says. I have no use for the truck or even the axles.
What would the axles be worth on something like this? Seems like the serious off roaders are looking for them, but I don't really have the room to keep something like this around waiting months for the large parts to sell. Is there any particular things I should be looking for on this truck to know if it's even worth the trouble?

Try Pirate4x4 or ColoradoK5. They have more serious offroaders, and those get sold fairly often, so you can see what they go for.

Best thing to do is to cut the boot around the knuckle and feel for a U-joint cap. A steering axle sells for 800-1K, rears sell for 300-400 hundred, guys normally run them till they find another steering axle since the factory turning radius stinks and most are welded front and rear. Or they get a rear for the extra chunk or 3rd. Some of the 2.5 ton T-case's are air shifted and alot of the mudding guys like them better. Jason. Last edited by Jason M; 05-21-2010 at 04:02 PM. |

For the really serious offroaders!!!!! Those things are tuff if you are going with huge tires and lots of HP. Removing the brake drums and installing drive line brakes are the way to go.

Jason is dead on about prices for those axles !! Plus the 2.5 cases are in demand !! Just post em up on any mud website (there are tons ) you will certainly get some offers if priced right !!

Re: Question about 2-1/2 ton axles
A little off topic but here's some Pics of how I narrowed my set of steering axle's.
I took 7.5"s off the long side to run a short side shafts in each axle. Made a line up pucks to fit the carrier jurnals and a another set to match the machined surrface on the end were the outer seals sit. I then cut the housing and chopped 7.5'' off the long side. In stalled the line up bar. Beveled one side and installed back up strips and welded them 100% and left the cover caps for a little extra beef. Jason. |

Re: Question about 2-1/2 ton axles
Thanks for the input on this everyone. Seems like all the pictures of rockwells I see show square tubes from the diff, while these are round tubes. I'm not even sure how to identify what this beast has on it.
