71 C10 Engine Question

Well I decided to change out some chrome pulleys on the front of the trucks engine with polished aluminum. I thought why not go ahead and decide to fix the leaking valve cover gaskets. I found some numbers on the heads that look to represent casting numbers. According to the Edelbrock site these are for a 14101128 ( 350, Corvette, 86-87, alm., angle plug, 58cc), the carb is a Holley 750 vacuum secondary, and the intake is a edelbrock performer RPM to match the heads. The cam is unknown but the rockers are comp cam 1.52 rollers. If I recall the engine was completed back in 2002 according to the owner, but thats about all I know. Does the corvette engine and tranny hurt the value of this truck?

My question is should I down size the carb, I've been reading 750's are more for 400+ci motors and this is just a 350. I'm also looking for something just a bit more crisper and easy for around town. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Would the heads being for a Corvette mean I have a corvette block?? Also this engine is backed with a Muncie 4spd..? Does this setup sound pretty jam up? I just want this thing tuned, so I can cruise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, the heads do not necessarily indicate that you have a Vette block. No, value is not hurt, it's a truck and clearly not stock anymore. I would bet it has a fairly radical cam based on the RPM intake, heads and 750 cfm Carb. You could try going to a 600 cfm Holley if you want more low end. Might help with low speed cruising. How do you know the block is not a 383 or 400 + C.I.D.?

What do I look for on the block to indicate size? Casting numbers are located where?

Seriously thinking about downsizing carbs, but with the heads flowing more than stock and me dropping back on the carb would the HP numbers drop?

The casting numbers for the block are on the drivers side behind the head. You may have to use a mirror to see them or once you have found them try to soak an old rag with some dirty oil and lay it on top of the numbers for a second then take a clean piece of paper and lay on the numbers and the numbers should be imprinted on the paper then just wipe off the little motor oil that is back there. The nubers should read 3970010 or 10153558. Something to that effect. You can then run the numbers on Mortec.com and you will know what block you have but you will not know if it's a stroker motor. Hope this helps.

Re: 71 C10 Engine Question

On your tuning issue, I would leave the 750 on there and run your fuel pressure around 6lbs, adjust your floats correctly ( if you don't know how just ask or go to Holley.com) and run your mixture screws on the lean side, maybe 1/2 to 3/4 turn out it depends really on what cam you're running and pull your dist. down a little if you've got your timing set on the high side, adjust your idle to around 800rpms in park and that motor should be more than enough to move your truck on down the road.
