It's a dirty job.....
Had yesterday off and I spent it in Lost Wages shop sandblasting my cab. One more day and I should have it where I can shoot primer on it and then begin the long journey of replacing cancer.
That is the beauty of sandblasting...it finds all the bad spots....

Dude thats Rad . Progress... I see some factory holes that are saying fill me in. Smooth fire wall. Do It ! is there any rust on that cab ? Looking good .

Factory holes......I will be shaving the firewall yes
Non Factory holes.......they are everywhere! It needs corners, rockers, kick plates, floor pans, a spot up by the windshield, and a couple bad spots under the factory gas tank....lots of work to do. I look at it and think I should look for a better cab and then I look at it again and think "I can fix this".......

that looks great! What kind of sandblaster are you using?? I tried using a cheap one from home depot.....it didn't work all that well. I was just using the sand they use to fill cracks between patio stones....what did you use??

Lost Wages has a 100lb siphon feed commercial blaster with a large air compressor pushing the media. We use a fine silica that we get through a local hardware store (Meeks). You would not want to use an aggressive media like the sand you used on body panels! You may try it again with a super fine silica sand and a lot of air pressure. Even with his compressor it does not take long and it is playing catch up.....
It is time consuming, but it works well.

I think you can fix it my truck didnt have F*^#$ing rocker when I got it I wish I had to fix your cab.

Be carefull with the sand blaster...it can create exsesive heat and waro the panels. Many body shops refuse to sand blast panels at all.

I use a 1936 Chicago Pneumatic
compressor powered by a Hercules JXD 6. I use Masonry sand with no rock. It is important to have no rock. I dry my sand and filter it through #8 hardward cloth into 55 gal drums. I use a 3/16 inch ceramic nozzle. It will work good to over 5/16 inch. I usually get the nozzles through Eastwood. I got into it a few years ago to do small items. I got overwealmed with work in a short time and had to quit because I had a full time job and it was about the time that all the regs. started. I kept all the equipment and use it for a few friends and myself. This gives a fine etched surface and will grip primer like a magnet. It is still good to use some self etching primer prior to using the regular primer. PS. We think that this compressor helped build the golden Gate Bridge. EdB |

sure, show the good pics! show em the bottom! The blaster is actually a pressure pot as compared to a siphon feed as 1971 described. This makes alot of difference in the amount of air and material you use. I was a little worried when i first used it on sheet metal, but i have blasted a soda can without denting it so i think it will be fine. We reuse the sand several times and sift it with a screen i got from eastwoodco.com . this was my bed i blasted top to bottom, the only warping i had on it was were i welded in panels.

You couldn't see all the rust holes in the bottom for the sand!! That's my story anyway....

That cab doesnt look bad, you still have the lower fender bolt brackets,& the lower door jams! I have seen a few in Illinois that the door dropped when you opened it, & when you drove them.....you got to rest your feet on the frame rail crazyL

It is worse than it looks from those pictures but it is all fixable. I don't have any rust in the firewall, vent areas and I think that is the worst spot because it is so hard to fix. The floor pans are gone in my cab as well as the supports. Corners and rockers are pretty standard. The other couple spots shouldn't be too bad....I just wish I was a better welder!
