Big block swap - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I need help from anyone who has personally swapped in a big block in place of a small block. My concerns are: A. Are the engine mounts(bolts to engine) and motor mount (clam-shell bolts to frame) the same? B. Is there a header that will fit with a 4/6 lowered suspension? I've seen 1 big block truck and the header had to be dented on passenger side to fit and it was very low to the ground.

Engine mounts and engine mount brackets are all the same. All you need are pullys, accessory brackets, headers, radiator (maybe)...that should be it (all I can remember right now).

As far as headers, I haven't made it that far yet, but if you stick with a good name brand and follow their applications you shouldn't have any problems.

Got a 4 row radiator, now I'm working on getting the alt. & PS brackets. Pulleys are available from summit. Headers? What about Headers?......Anyone know? I don't want them to look like my full lenth Hedman Elites- just barely off the ground with the sbc. Thanx for the motor mount info Jeff

Dont forget youll have to get a new fan shroud since there is less room between the enginge and radiator. I got mine from www.cheyennepickup.com PT#21289 $65.00

Just put electric fans on it and forget about a shroud.

Get some good ones though. Stay out of Autozone or Pepboys when shopping for electric cooling fans. I suggest Spal fans.

I know on the 67-72's some guys like using Chevelle headers, maybe something to look into.

Cole thats the same shroud I had to go buy when I put the 4-row in. I still have it, its off the truck right now. I think Ill keep it though, Im gonna try to install it over my electric fan for a cleaner look. If I decide not to do that, Ill be sure to post it for sale in the for sale section, its like new.

For the money Loicoln Mark VIII fans are the best. Its been reported that they will "flow" 4000 + cfm. They do pull close to 30 amps, buy your alternator accordingly. If you want a dual fan setup then use the 95-98 Ford windstar fans from a van......john

PS this is acommon setup on muscle cars switching over to electric. Much more info on Chevelles.com

I recently bolted a big block in my 79 Blazer 2wd(for sale by the way)lol.anyhow frame mounts,clamshells i took from a bb 73 swb truck for the swap,and cleaned and painted and went to put on,and they were the same.i bolted in a 4 row radiator,my top radiator hold down is different so i need to get one.use all the brackets and pulleys from a 73 up truck or 69 up bb car.i have the pulleys,ps brackets,ac brackets,and alt i may sell.that are extras i bought a 73 short bed factory 454 truck for the motor,and a 73 454 3/4 ton truck.i bought the pair for the motor and trannys alot of people were pissed i parted the short bed,but all i wanted was the motor really.but its a simple bolt in swap,my drive line same length onlything i did is use the dual exhaust crossmember,and i saved the other i dont know why.im not into 73 ups really.but i wanted to get this 2wd Blazer together to sell and make a buck.if you have any swap questions this one is still fresh in my mind.email me,or post here.i dont check the 73 side much,but im easily found on the "other side"lol the 67-72 areas
