Winch Bumpers

Searched online and on here. I can't find where anyone makes a winch bumper preferably with brushguard for our trucks. Am I right to assume the only what is to make one? I have some ideas in my head but no fabrication skills. What has everyone else done?

Re: Winch Bumpers

You are not going to find hardly anybody wanting to do this. Try the 4x4 forum, that would be much better. Maybe a mod can move this over there for you. I bought a used custom made steel plate bumper/brush guard combo off a 73 and up Chevy 4x4 for $50.00 that I will modify to fit my lifted 68 C10 2wd. The main consideration is making sure the force of the winch is properly distributed to the frame of the truck. Otherwise, the winch will just pull the bumper off the truck first time you use it. I do remember reading on here about a small manufacturer that made these custom but the cost was outrageous, like over $1,000 per bumper. Try doing a search here for more info. I also remember seeing an article in a 4 wheel drive magazine that showed the GM Truck Center make a winch bumper custom for some 71 or 72 off road Suburban. I believe it was tubular and ugly to me but maybe they can make you one that looks better.

Re: Winch Bumpers

My '70 Suburban has a custom built diamond-plate winch bumper and brush guard that was built for it when the truck was bought new. It's a nice one and built real tough, too bad someone stole the winch off of it before I bought the truck. The only thing I didn't like is they welded it to the truck's frame and didn't bolt it on. I need to pull it off and paint it before it rusts out so it's gonna take some good torch work to wash the welds off clean. I got a few pictures today before it got dark so here they are, took 'em on my phone so they're nowhere near the best. Someone added the chrome tubing to it at some point, I'm going to remove it and replace it with flat-strap once I get to work on the truck again.

Front view

Driver's side view

Pass. side view

Under the driver's side, has a tow hook made out of 1" steel round bar for each side.

Here are a couple of mine that a local welding shop did. Only one is a winch bumper and it is on a reciever hitch so I can put it on the back bumper too.

Re: Winch Bumpers

I personally am not a huge fan of the tube type bumpers. That full bumper on that white truck is kind of nice. I hopeing ivy redding can make me one like this for mine:

I think it is supposed to bolt on where the bottom bolts are, and that guy doesn't have it on.

Re: Winch Bumpers

I don't know where I got this photo, I found it while researching potential bumper solutions for my 59 with a Sidewinder winch. Like the look, look like you can tuck a horizontal unit up in the bumper too. If I remember right it was originally for a later model and the owner modified the end wraps to fit the Blazer.

Re: Winch Bumpers

I didn't think I did either until I started working on my 59, everything up to that point had been basically bolt on and replace. Been thru a lot of grinder wheels and discs but found the key is making a good cardboard template and the old measure twice cut once deal. Most of it is made of of flat trapazoids, not compound curves. Over cut to give yourself room to trim and fit. It looks like some of it was bent on a brake so welding would be just at the vertical joints. Jump in, the waters fine!

Thats what they did. We are dealers for Road Armor. Having a bumper made is less than most people think if you have the resources (friends) Guys here in Houston can fab anything.

Re: Winch Bumpers

Hi, olt thread but I thought Iīd give my two cents... I had a bumper built by GMTC. I had to reweld a few things that didnīt come perfect and customized the bumper a little to my taste. But this is how it turned out. I think it looks nice and classic and really matches the classic styling of these trucks.

Re: Winch Bumpers

The headlight gaurds are not very tough but the rest is hella stout. The up rights are actually one big L shape of 3/8's steel that extend 10"s down the frame rails. The rest of the plate bumper is 1/4" and gusseted all the way to the end caps. If i bend this I have worse issues somewhere else.

Re: Winch Bumpers

Even back when you could buy the winch bumpers, most owners made their own. The bumpers came after the winches as the bigger winch companies expanded their product line. I'd love to own a vintage store-bought winch bumper, but the way it was only wimps(& gov't) paid for the store-bought bumpers and the rest of us made serious bumpers that suited our needs

Re: Winch Bumpers

I was crusing the web one day and found a bumper for the 67-72 that had leaf spring shackles mounted ON THE BUMPER.
I want to say it was DIY4X4.com
