speed cable

Hi Floks, New Help on a speed cable.
I have a 79 th350. Cluster goes to 100 mph, may not mean antything, thought i mention it. I don't have my speed od working. I checked the cluster, but did not check the gears on the trans yet. Here is the questions!

How long is the th350 cable??? The one that is in it is 43 1/2 inches long, with a white tip on it. That part goes into the cluster.

What color should the 350 gears be at the trans if I have a cluster that read 100 mph?

Thanks for the help.

John

Re: speed cable

Is it not working at all?

If it's not working at all, unscrew it from the tranny and put a drill on the cable. Have someone check the other end. If it doesn't move the speedo needle, disconnect the cable from the cluster and have them check that end of the cable while you turn it with the drill.

I haven't had this problem in a long time, but it seems like there's two cables junctioned together on a Blazer between the tranny and speedo, that may or may not be the case on a pickup. But it's a very simple way to check.

Good luck with it.

Re: speed cable

Thanks BRUISER,
Naw,, its not working at all. It didn't work for the last two years. The last time the inspection guy said that if I don't have any miles on it he will not inspect it. Can't have that. I installed a lift in my garage and the only thing that was in it were fords. I need truck extenders to get my truck up in the air. I will do as you suggested. I may have to visit the site that mbgmike suggested.

Thanks all again, John

Re: speed cable

When you unscrew the cable from the tranny there will be an inch or two sticking out. Just tighten your drill tip down on the cable and spin it while someone watches the other end. You can find the point of failure pretty quick that way. It happened to me once and turned out to be a broken cable.

Re: speed cable

I pulled the cable out and it is intack. That is why I think it is the gears.
I was just wondering if the right gears are in. Since I put this trans in after buying it on e-bay. The truck is a 2wd, automatic. The old speed od worked but bounced around a little. Then I put the trans in as i mentioned above.
What I thought of doing is going to my local yard and pulling everything from cluster, cable, housing and gears from trans. Thanks again,

John

Re: speed cable

I'd still put the drill on the cable and spin it up. That's the only way to find out if the cable is broken in the housing somewhere inbetween. It does happen.
