My shaft is too short - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

After putting in a f&%# 9", I purchased a nice aluminum drive shaft with a spicer slip yoke and 1350 u joints from another boardmember. After measuring and having the DS cut and balanced I found out I needed to change the pinion yoke as it was not for a 1350. Now I have 2 1/4" of slip yolk in the tailshaft and 1 1/2" out (pictured) I was shooting for 1" - 3/4" of slip yoke out. Am I still good ? Need I test whats left of my sanity moving the engine/ trans back? This is how it sits on at a static drop with all for wheels on the ground. Thanks for any help.

Most places I have read say to push the yoke into the trans as far as it will go and pull it out 3/4 to 1 inch, then measure for your drive shaft length. Hope that is what you wanted...

Is that 1 1/2" measured with the back-end lifted? Because when the suspension is fully unloaded, that is where you have it maxed out. If that's the case, I think you can get away with 1 1/2" out, as long as it pushes in when you reload the suspension. Any more than that could be a problem. More specifically, if you plan on doing any burnouts with 1 1/2" out, you may zip the splines right off. But if you plan on driving it easy, you shouldn't have any problems.

If you do want to cut corners and leave it like that, I'd get a drive shaft loop regardless. That way if it does come out, it won't be catastrophic.

Storm: this is wheels on the ground, suspension loaded. No burnouts, Why else would I have a BBC

Never looking to cut corners on something my family will be riding in or that could harm others.

Well then in that case, to do it right, you had better get the shaft redone or find a built-up slip yoke that works with a short shaft. I've seen them around.

Do it right. Also, install a drive shaft loop, too, just in case your shaft lets loose. You don't want the front of your shaft to drop onto the ground, pile drive your rear end and end up pole vaulting the entire truck.

check with the shop that is going to do the new drive shaft 1st!!!! I all the drive shafts that i have ever replaced they have ALWAYS told me to put the truck on the ground "normal ride height" put the yoke all the way in to the back of the trans and the measure from center to center of each U joint loops and they will take out what is needed.

Ya gotta get peoples attention somehow! I always appreciate the humor on the board ( which rubbers are the best, lets see your double D's ect... thanks for all the input, found a longer slip yoke on Denny drive shaft today.

I guess there's enough people in the world with short shafts that could always use an extension on the slip end. Now you don't have to feel so concerned when your wife drives.
