Well I knew there would be set backs..

The guy who was going to fix some rested spots on my truck came by today and told me I would be better off just buying a new cab.

I guess the license tag fits the truck... NVR-ENZ.

You found the wrong guy then. Keep looking. Someone that's good with a welder and sheet metal will come along eventually. When these guys get started, they can usually have your cab welded up in a day! It's amazing to watch them work with the sparks flying. Offers of beer is usually good persuasion but only before and after they work, not during. LOL. After the welding is done, the hardest part is smoothing it all out. But then you can hire another guy for that if the welder doesn't want to do it.

I've had my own (and seen many) cars/trucks that I thought would never see the road again come back to life under the hands of skilled body work. I only do mechanical work myself, as body work is science fiction to me.

drivers side

It's weird that its so bad there... But the floor is perfect. Rockers are barely rusted.. But the all the cab / bed supports are rusted bad.

Re: Well I knew there would be set backs..

wow, didn't expect to see rust there. Couldn't you find a good cab and chop the whole top off? It sounds hard but it would be easier than doing a chop top build. Just throwing out ideas, I'm more of a mechanical guy too.

Re: Well I knew there would be set backs..

Yeah, your guy is right. Hunt up another cab.

If you find one with a good roof, pasting them together is no big deal - drill out the spot welds on the back where the back wall meets the floor & wack it thru the windshield posts - cut the one you'll use the floor from really tall on the posts & cut the roof donor close to the dash, then measure, measure, measure! There are little "dimples" on the posts (they would be inside the gasket if it were on) you can use to measure. The hardest part of the whole deal is to make both cuts straight.

Re: Well I knew there would be set backs..

The problem with these old rides is that you never know what you're going to get. It's possible someone painted the truck 25 years ago, stripped out the seam sealer, and never put it back in. Or it cracked long long long ago and was never fixed, or the FL salt air?

I agree with the above, if your lower cab is really that nice, it may be worth buying a good used roof. Ask your body guy if he's comfortable/capable of doing a roof swap and how much.

Re: Well I knew there would be set backs..

A buddy of mine's dad rebuilds old cars and is going to come and check out my truck. So I will see what he has to say. Might as well start working on the other parts of the truck. The bed is prob F'd also. We shall see.

Re: Well I knew there would be set backs..

They make a patch panel now for the roof line. Very common to rust there i hear. I believe Nevilles Truck carries one. Nevchev.net is the address. Also you could always find one with a trashed floor. (Should be easy) that you can get for not much money and just cut the the top and replace. A good welder and/or bondy man will have no problems.

Re: Well I knew there would be set backs..

There is a cat on here somewhere with a truck with a decent cab that wants to make a convertible out of it... sounds like you 2 should hook up... trade your rusted out top cab for his good cab...

Got my bed off and the cab unbolted. The cab is going to the body shop on Saturday and I'll see what they say.

Thanks guys.

Re: Well I knew there would be set backs..

I would get another cab, welding in a patch there in the roof is tricky. We got rust free cabs all over the place over here for cheap. Make a road trip of it and head west with your trailer.
