MAF sensor modification

I'm working on a second modification to the intake system. First was ram air, now a MAF modification. I found a sensor on craigslist for $30. It included the TBI connection down to the upper filter box connection.

Removing the screen was easy. A small c-wire holds in place. The screen is not really thick. I'm not installing it without a screen. I've ordered some new screen material. The screen will be thicker and provide more airflow. Hopefully the material will arrive early next week.

Re: MAF sensor modification

The new screens arrived today. I used a set of scissors to cut both pieces.

#1 - stock screen = 1/4" thick
#2 - plastic 1/8" 6:1 ratio = 3/4" thick
#3 - aluminum 3/16" 5:1 ratio = 3/4" thick

Once I clean the sensor, I'll install the aluminum first. It has a better flow ratio due to honeycomb size. If engine codes appear then, I'll install the smaller plastic screen. The new screens have 1/2" more flow path. A smoother air flow over the MAF wires should provide better readings.

Here is a video demonstrating the affect of airflow.

Re: MAF sensor modification

I cleaned up the MAF. It was really dirty. Not even using some MAF cleaner removed all the gunk off the little resistors. I was careful to clean off the grim built up over the years. The sensor is ready to install.

The sensor uses a contact for operation. I cleaned off the grime with a wire brush. I also used the brush to remove oxidation and grime.

Re: MAF sensor modification

The experiment begins! I installed it today. I'll post pictures after I download from my camera.
