56 vin locations

Got this 56 panel, no vin in the door jam area. Did they put them anywhere else on the truck?

the top of the frame close to the steering box. and one on top of the frame under the cab on the drives side. but you can't see that one with out removing the cab.

Re: 56 vin locations

All I can find on that # is it's a 56 that was made in KC Mo. The tag that was on the door post would have had a 3a or 3b on it or some thing close telling if it's was a 1/2 or 3/4 ton and what wheel base it is. For some reason they didn't stamp that part on the frame.

Re: 56 vin locations

Do you have the title or last reg.? That should work. The dmv probley told you that that # was to short. There just not used to see old truck VINs. Don't know how it works in Tx. but I have heard the girls behind the desk at the DMV in Ar. talk about over riding the system and making it take it.

Re: 56 vin locations

I think this is a case where it would be helpful to make sure everyone understands the truck was not produced with a VIN. VIN is a legally defined serial number system that didn't start until the early 80's. If DMV is expecting to match that structure it just isn't going to happen.

Re: 56 vin locations

no im trying to find out who the last registered owner was. I do not have the title or apparently a VIN. If i can come up with the vin i can get a name i can look into. I was told the truck was driven up until 1998. They also told me that they got the truck from a friend and that they had the title. They called me asking for the VIN as apparently the friend has two titles for 56 panels.

I called today and left a message of what i had hoping they can match it up. However id rather just go around the people i bought it from as they do not have the title themselves. They told me they would have to ask before giving out their friends numbers and i havent heard back. This was over a week ago.

Re: 56 vin locations

Not try to be a wise guy but sounds like something that should have been done before $$ changed hands. In Ar. you can get a title on a bill of sale on something that old. But it has to have the VIN on it. or what ever you want to call the # on the a-pillar and the frame. Soulds like you will have to sweet talk the folks you bought it from, because that's the only # that is on that truck.

Last time someone tried to sell me a truck promising a title later I made it a two part deal. I take the truck and leave a little money. You get the rest when I get the title.

It didn't work out very well. The guy was never able to produce a title for the truck. Whether the story was BS or he just didn't care was never clear to me but I was stuck with a truck with no paperwork.

In this state that is not an easy thing to deal with but I found a way.

And I got a lot of useful parts off that truck that I actually only paid $50 for in the end. It was a panel and I sold the original buckets for for more than that.

That really does look like a partial VIN, or serial number as it might have been called back then. What is missing is a letter or letters preceding the 56 that tells what series the truck is and which plant it came from.

Re: 56 vin locations

wow thats cool!

Ok so we are missing model and wheelbase. Do we know the vin codes for those?

is the panel the same wheel base as my 56 shortbed pickup?

Intresting that k or 0 gives me a kansas plant.

Vin off my 56 short bed big window is v3a56k023856

I used the 3a added to the numbers i had (560003394) to get the model and wheelbase but then it said none for the plant. Without the added on numbers it came back as being from kansas.

Must be a different prefix for the panels

Re: 56 vin locations

Slammy,

You have bigger problems than not being able to find the truck in the DMV database. Here in Texas, the DPS can and will confiscate your truck if it does not have a factory affixed VIN tag, on your 56 that means it MUST be spot welded to the door jamb, not rivetted or screwed on. You need to get with the local DPS and get a state assigned VIN tag. It's a bit of a pain in the butt to do this but you don't risk loosing your ride this way. I had to go this route on a '57 panel I had a few years back. A close friend of mine is a Sgt. with the DPS in charge of vehicle theft. He's the one that set me straight on this.

It actually has a state of california assigned vehicle number tag on it but the numbers have been scratched off. Im just trying to sell this thing, im not doing any work with it regarding the title as i have enough work trying to get a title on my 56 pickup. Someday ill get under there and check the frame under the floor. I only got a partial vin from by the steeing box.

Anybody know prefix code for a 1/2 ton panel? I was told what city the supposed last owner lives in so if i guess and get it right then maybe i can get a title that way.

Re: 56 vin locations

So now we have a truck with no title or good serial no AND and altered/defaced assigned # issued by a State agency? This is going to get interesting. I'd start getting notarized affidavits from previous owners stating who they bought and sold it to, or copies of previous bills or sale to sort this out.

Trucks with the paper history that this one has are a parts trucks. It could easily cost $400 to get it titled, if it doesn't turn out stolen, salvage, or some other title encumberment.

hahha you guys are so dramatic! OH NOESSSS whatever will i do hahah.

Ill drag it to the front of the shop and jack the body up and get the vin under the cab and see if i can do anything with that. If not, ill just take the parts i need off it and cut it up i guess. Not the end of the world.
