sandblast tailgate?

I think I am ready to clean my tailgate up and get it primed. I know I can do it with a da grinder, but that will take some time and elbow grease. It is an after market tailgate. Anyone think I could sandblast it without damaging it?

Re: sandblast tailgate?

Aftermarket tailgates are usually super thin metal, so I would be real careful if you sandblast it not to warp the crap out of it. Maybe a DA with some 120 would work if you have time.

Re: sandblast tailgate?

a tailgate would b pretty hard to warp for someone familar with proper blasting techniques

lo pressure and at a 45degree angle is the way i'd do it with sand

I agree, just don't concentrate on any area too much and be carefull with the big flat areas.

Re: sandblast tailgate?

find someone in you area that does media blasting. You can also buy a small media blaster from harbor freight.

Re: sandblast tailgate?

Mine is the same way and I started on it with a "clean and strip" disc and it started to look good after just a couple minutes.

Re: sandblast tailgate?

I agree with bigsnookmaster to Ospho it afterwards. I had to blast, Ospho, lightly sand, and Ospho again with the deepest rust.
