starter/flexplate problem

My buddy bought a 72 truck cause the previous owner couldn't start it.(he bought it without hearing it run) The starter barely and i mean BARElY touches the flywheel. It makes that terrible grinding sound. We went to all the auto parts stores and discovered it's probably NOT the starter.
The only thing we could figure is the flywheel is on backwards. It's a NOT original 305 in it with a 350 tranny.
here's the question and a pic. IS THE FLYWHEEL ON BACKWARDS?

the pic is me directly under the truck, i removed the other bolts and took the pic before removing the last one.

It is on backward. While you have it off, check to see if it's the correct one for the 305. I've never seen or heard of one being on backward untill now.

i dont think he/we even know if it's a 305 or 350.

It's on backwards... the "dimples" need to be towards the torque converter.

They aren't different from 305 to 402. I have put one on backwards before. I didn't figure it out until I went to bolt up my converter. I was 19 and not to expierenced at the time. Lucky I was using an over head lift with a tranny Jack so it litterally took 10 min to drop the tranny and fix it. I put that tranny in twice in 45 min thanks to the lift

everybody pretty much agree's it's on backwards and i agree too.

jbristo67, you remember the andy griffith episode where gomer has to work on some guys car but needs to stay at the jail? He ended up taking the "whole" car apart and putting it back together "inside" the jail. LOL
when you said that about dropping the tranny twice in 45 min, thats what it reminded me of. ha ha.

Check the tooth count, If it is barely touching the starter. It could be a 12 3/4" flex-plate off a car with 153 teeth, Instead of a 168 tooth 14" for a truck.

I just posted about this 2 days ago, I was lucky and caught it while the engine was out of the truck. It is backwards the raised dimples go toward the converter.

thanks everybody that responded! problem solved.
the truck is fixed and running. Needs timing to be adjusted but the good part is that there is NO screeching or noises coming from the starter/flexplate.
The only bad part is tranny fluid in your hair (spilled a bunch removing the lines), damm i hate that. LOL

I did the same thing with the throwout bearing on the Blazer. First time I ever put a manual transmission and transfer case in. Then it was the second time I ever did it!

Ya know, I'm still scratching my head on this one. Isn't the bolt pattern asymmetrical, so the flywheel can go on only one way? The flywheels for some engines have a weight on them, so this would have to be a requirement.

you would think that, but believe me i found out that you CAN put a flywheel on backwards. ha ha.
once i turned that flywheel around it looked and started the way god and GM intended it to , perfect.
right now i'm in the process of taking off that holley it came with and putting a Qjet.
Love them Qjets.
man, i love it when a plan comes together and works out right.
my buddy is happy with this truck and i'm glad to be able to help out.
