1966 327/double humps vs. my 350
I just happened on to a 327 motor out of a 66 chevelle. The motor has never been broke open and was running (fast) when it was pulled cuz of a wreck. Its got double hump heads,a holley 4 barrel, and all the brackets. Its been sitting in covered for several years. The guy poured antifreeze in it before storage. He wants 500 bones for it and if he took care of it the way he takes care of the truck he drives now it should be in really good shape.
Advise pleeze.

How many miles are on it? You say it was running and fast when pulled, because of a wreck. I'm assuming it was involved in a wreck because of the fast driving. Is this right? If so, this tells me, it was abused. This puts doubts in my mind as to what condition it may be in.
I've never been a fan of buying a motor someone has built and claims it's this or that, unless it's truely someone I can trust. There is few who I would trust to tell me the truth when it comes to shelling out 500 bucks. If you trust him, and believe he is on the level, it will be your choice. Does he have all the receipts of the build? Did he build it? Etc. 327's are great engines. Back in the day, they were killer on the roads in light body vehicles. They make the most power in the high rpm. Not torquey like bigger cubes, but man they are fun to drive if built right. But, I think for trucks, bigger cubes is better. Trucks need torgue to get the heavy ass things moving. Personally, I think I would pass and invest the 500 in something bigger.

What Mike said about cubes and torque is right on the money. What would really concern me is the length of time the motor has been left in storage. The storage area would have to be totally void of any moisture. Periodically squirting oil into the cylinders only protects the cylinder walls and rings from rust. What about the cam, lifters, crank and everything else made or iron and steel inside the engine. If I were the buyer I would insist on pulling at least the pan to inspect all the main crank journals for hidden damage which would only cost you the price of the pan gasket if you saw something that you didn't like.
