LMC Cowl Seal garbage

So what is the trick to make this thing not throw my hood out of alignment? This is the one that is shaped like an "L". I belive it is suposed to layover so I taped it over to maybe help it start to form and let my hood lower but am wondering if theres a better option or if I need to trim it or something. So far I would say I am un impressed with the quality of over half the stuff I have recieved from Lmc, very poor quality and fit on a lot of their stuff.

Re: LMC Cowl Seal garbage

every cowl seal I used did the same thing, regardless of maker or vendor. the "new" plastic did not lay over enough. I just took mine out and left it out.

I guess you could try sitting it out in the sun with a few heavy books on it. this may help form the plastic into a tighter bend.

Re: LMC Cowl Seal garbage

when installing parts on old classic vehicles it helps if you can outthink the part and make it perform the way it should b the best
thats the big difference between being a parts changer and a technical restoreation specialist

You might have to adjust your hood hinges.

Re: LMC Cowl Seal garbage

I think that Sinister hit the nail on the head. The hood to cowl seal is meant to seal the area between the hood and cowl. If it lays over it just doesn't do an effective job of sealing. After about 3 or 4 months the seals will relax a little and start laying down some, however your original had 40 years of relaxing to lay the way they do..

They are not plastic, they are rubber. If you have one that is plastic, it was wrong to begin with.

Most times what I have found out when the back of your hood sets up is the hood hinges are worn out, and need replacing. To check your hood hinges you just lift the hood, grab it by the front and move it side to side. Look at the rivets in the hinges and if they are moving around, your hinges are bad. When you set a hood with worn out hinges on a new seal, the seal will hold it up in the back. The reason that the hood may not have done that befor is that it was sitting down on a worn out hood to cowl seal. WES

By the way we have 2 sets of Genuine GM Hood Hinges in stock. I am not a fan of the reproductions myself. WES

You can get them from GM also. That is what I use on our trucks. Just a little more expensive.

Re: LMC Cowl Seal garbage

I installed a new cowl seal a few weeks ago. It made the hood ride up a little less than an eighth of an inch. I figured a hood adjustment would solve this, but I've waited in order for the seal to relax some before I do so. New door seals are the ones that fit really tight.

Re: LMC Cowl Seal garbage

My contact at GM told me they are discontinued and none can be found in the original package to confirm it is really a GM part. Part no. 6270848. Apparently, some dealerships carry the reproduction stuff, too.

I bought mine from Classic Parts and it lays back like the original and is made of rubber, its pliable enough that it does not interfere with the hood closing. I ordered all my parts from Classic Parts and have been very happy with the quality.

My hood hinges are tight and they have a fresh coat of gloss plack powder coat on them.

mstrav1973, Was that seal bent at a 90 from the package? If not, loosen the screws across the front of the cowl and pull the seal forward. It just takes about a 1/16" to allow the seal to lay down a bit. The vertical part looks to be hard against the cowl. WES
