Motor has A TICK... Thoughts?
I have a 72 blazer with a pretty well built 350. It has recently developed a ticking noise. At first it came and went. This last time out we went 15 miles on light trails and when we finished the tick was persistent. In the same little trip I developed some smoke coming from the drivers side only. Same side tick is heard.
The smoke is does not smell like oil and I know it is not coolant, it also smells like a motor running a little rich. So what are your bets? I am thinking about trying to DIY, but I have the head off my jeep now and am replacing the cam on it, it has taken longer than it should. This might go to the shop.

Lifters ? Pour a small amount of tranny oil down the carb and see if that makes it go away.

Re: Motor has A TICK... Thoughts?
are you sure its not an exhaust leak?those donuts make a ticking when they rot out// tried torqueing the exhaust manifolds ?
i wouldnt use tranny fluid, MARVEL MYSTERY OIL is the stuff for lifters if that is in fact your problem

Re: Motor has A TICK... Thoughts?
THAT FLEA & TICK SPRAY WAS PRICELESS. USE THE SCREWDIVER AS A STETHASCOPE TRICK & ISOLATE JUST WHERE THE TICK IS COMMING FROM. I WOULD BET THAT IT'S EITHER A VALVE TRAIN PROBLEM, OR AN EXHAUST LEAK. THE TROUBLE WITH TICKING SOUNDS IS SOMETIMES THEY DEVELOPE INTO A GRINDING, CLANGING, BANGING SOUND IF IGNORED. JOHN

Re: Motor has A TICK... Thoughts?
I would check for an exhaust leak around the manifolds or headers.

Re: Motor has A TICK... Thoughts?
Is the smoke coming from the exhaust pipe or the engine compartment? I would also use Marvel Mystery Oil. That's what my pops would use. You need to loosen up and clean out those hydraulic lifters since they might be stuck and all gummed up inside. After running that Marvel Mystery Oil through it, might want to adjust the valves as well with the engine running. That's the best way. Also, turn the push rods to free them up and loosen any gunk that might be in them.
