control arm cross shaft question

I have a 68 1/2 ton 2wd. I am replacing the upper and lower control arm cross shafts. I bought new ones and got the shafts installed in the control arms. After mounting them on the frame the cross shafts didn't appear to be certered. I pulled them off and spun the shaft on the lowers and got them close. I tried the same on the uppers but they seem to be binding after about 2 turns and are still not cetered. Is there a procedure to install and center these? Should they spin freely? My Haynes manual doesn't say anything and my searches on here haven't given me much. Thanks for your help.

Re: control arm cross shaft question

I thought the lower shafts have dimples in them that only allow you to install them one way.

Re: control arm cross shaft question

The dimples on the lower shaft go into the brackets on the front crossmember were the ubolts are. I centered the shaft best I could and then started turning the nuts in a little at a time on each side until they were tight. Same way for the top

Re: control arm cross shaft question

Great. I installed the shafts and tightened them down off the truck then i installed them. It sound like that is what i did wrong. I will loosen up the nuts and start over and see how that goes. Thanks for the help guys.
