Road trip essentials

What do you guys bring in your truck on a road trip? I have pretty much the whole garage in my truck's bed right now (fluids, spares, tools), but y'all might remind me of something I forgot. I've checked every fluid, nut, connection, tire pressure etc. and she's running like a top. Pray for me

A cell phone and a list of phone numbers of contacts along the way.

Re: Road trip essentials

My Dad road trip tools consisted of the following: a mag light, duct tape, a flat head screwdriver, a gallon of water and a crescent wrench.

Re: Road trip essentials

Where to start?
A fairly complete tool box, extra fluids, flashlight (preferably 3 or more batteries) with new batteries in it & a spare bulb, reflective safety vest for roadside repairs, coveralls so the inside of the truck don't get grubby after roadside repairs, hand cleaner or handi-wipe type towels, "Rescue Tape" if you can find it, duct tape, cell phone, truck board emergency contact list, lots of drinking water or Gatorade, energy bars; if you're going someplace really cold, a survival blanket.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. When I remember more, I'll add it.
Some people think I overdo it, but when I'm on the road I'm driving a truck that's 40+ years old & sometimes the unexpected happens, or something breaks.

Re: Road trip essentials

Yep, I have a chase vehicle the whole way thankfully. Mom is following me halfway and my grandpa is leading the way from there.. Only way she would let me drive this truck six hours away Got my bro with me, but he's as useless as tits on a boar when it comes to cars.. It'll be in the day aswell. Got lug wrench, jumpers, no spare..

Old ice chests work real nice.
But if you're going to fly to pick up a vehicle & then drive it cross country to home, don't put a lot of stickers on the ice chest.

If you don't have a spare, I'd at least have some cans of fix a flat.

Re: Road trip essentials

I ALWAYS KEEP MY JUNKYARD TOOL BAG BEHIND THE SEAT. A CELL PHONE IS A GREAT IDEA TOO. (ALTHOUGH I DON'T OWN ONE) I'VE FLOWN 800 OR 1000 MILES SEVERAL TIMES TO PICK UP AN OLD TRUCK & DRIVEN IT HOME. KINDA EXCITING, & I'VE NEVER HAD TO WALK YET. (KNOCKS ON WOOD) JOHN

Re: Road trip essentials

Regarding the fix a flat. Just walked out to a flat tire. The can of fix a flat didn't inflate it. I guess they're not all created equally. Did have a flat tire repair kit which did work. So maybe a 12 volt air compressor isn't such a bad idea instead.

Re: Road trip essentials

The best advice I can give is do a through safety inspection on it before you hit the road. Hopefully you can catch something and fix it so it won't leave you on the road.
Pay special attention to;

brake and fuel hoses (cracks, swelling) and steel lines (rust, leaks)
leaks around wheel cylinders / master cylinder
radiator hoses (cracks, swelling)
loose bolts / lug nuts
tires (cracks, nails, plenty of tread)
lights
wiper blades
wheel bearings
universal joints (lube and check for looseness)
wires (broken insulation, not contacting sharp edges, exhaust)
check all fluid levels including rear end
tie rods / ball joints / steering (check for excess play, loose nuts and lube)
alternator (noise and charging voltage)
belts (glasing and cracks)
brake pads / shoes and drums (cracks, thickness)

I'm sure I'm forgetting something, and don't forget extra fuses, bulbs, lug wrench and jack and spare set of points or ignition module.

Re: Road trip essentials

also, 204 miles and I only burned 3/4 of a tank of fuel. With crazy wind, 70+ mph the whole way. 90+ mph five minute sprint to catch my mom when a lady cut me off then stopped at a yellow..
