VIN Decode Question

I have 2 87 Silverado VIN's they are...

1GCER14K5HJ134814
1GCER14K3HJ149408

now after the "K" there is a 5 or a 3. Can someone tell me what the difference is? Thanks.

Re: VIN Decode Question

I believe the 3 and the 5 are what is known as a check digit, which verifies VIN accuracy.....

However the VIN with the 3 does have a Salvaged title... if you weren't already aware of that. It is also a Dark Grey color.. The other one is medium blue.

Re: VIN Decode Question

How did you find out that the VIN has a salvage title? I was told it was but I wanted to make sure.

Heres some pics

Re: VIN Decode Question

With a VIN I can do amazing stuff. I encourage all of my customers to conceal the VIN in their windshield area with tape or piece of paper. You'd be amazed how many bad people are out there, and the nasty things they can do with your VIN. And the # behind the year indicator digit is just a check digit.

I tried them but they want payment? Feb 2010 was when it must of went through the insurance. I think I'm going to buy it anyway and do a Salvage inspection on it and fix it up. Full load '87 Silverados are hard to come by...I think...

Sure seems like we built a lot of 'em (judging by standing on the line, watching them go by)....

Re: VIN Decode Question

The how come you dont see any around? I have been looking for another 350/700R4 full load Slilverado for over a year now and either they are rusted far beyond repair or they have been hacked up. I see lots of full load trucks but always missing A/C or windows and locks?

BTW I pick this one up on Sunday.

Re: VIN Decode Question

Given their somewhat shorter production time in '87, and their demand for the first year of the 350 with fuel injection, they are just a bit harder to come by than 86 down. There will probably be more of them left after another 10 years though. I still see a good amount for sale around me locally these days, most just seem to be very proud of them.

Re: VIN Decode Question

My perspective might be skewed, too, because in Engineering we tended to order fully loaded trucks.

Remember the old G Vans? We found that the vast majority of passenger vans were company vehicles. Almost all of the vehicles built for regular customers were "cargo" type vans...

Re: VIN Decode Question

Keith, Since you worked for GM how come you didn't order a full load truck? Personal preference?

Re: VIN Decode Question

Yep. That's how we always ordered 'em: rubber floor mats, roll up windows, manual locks, manual trans, etc. Easy to clean and Dad always said it was less stuff to go wrong...

By the way, I originally ordered my truck without A/C. After I had placed the order I found out we were moving to Arizona, so I actually caught up to the order and had them add Air to it!
