Where is the rain coming in ?

We have a lot of rain this spring and a couple of times after a good soaker I have found a little water had dripped down on the upper sloped part of the passenger side floorboard. I'm thinking its coming from the windshield as the seal is older, does that make sense or is something else leaking?

Re: Where is the rain coming in ?

sounds right, one way to locate it(not that u want more water in your truck) take a garden house and douse the suspected area if it leaks you've found the spot, could be i know on mine my antenna is crap and its mounted on front pass fender and it leaks pretty bad haven't seen to much get in the cab , but could be another spot to check

Re: Where is the rain coming in ?

common leak areas are the cowl vent flap and also the rain gutters if the sealant/weatherstripping is dryied out and cracked wiwill allow leakage

Re: Where is the rain coming in ?

If I understand correctly, the water is dripping on the floor where it slopes up towards the windshield - if so, I'd bet it's a leak around/in the heater box.

Re: Where is the rain coming in ?

I'd pull the cowl and take a peek. I had a leak in the same area. Was both the windshield seal and cowl.

Re: Where is the rain coming in ?

my guess would be the cowl as well. on my recently re-aquired 72 my glove box area(not that it had the liner in there to begin with when i got it) would constantly be moist and i kept a haynes manual in there and its got the wet look to the pages. my other guess would be around the windshield

Re: Where is the rain coming in ?

Thanks for all the replies. I do have a new windshield rubber and plan to change the windshield as well. I did take the vent cowl vent off a year or two ago and cleaned it all out and put some screening underneath it to catch the leaves. The drips are on the slope part about half way between the hump and the passenger door.

I haven't driven the truck much the last two summers and this year decided to drive for a few months and all it has done around here is have record rail falls.

Re: Where is the rain coming in ?

I'm sticking a pic of my firewall in so you can see what will happen if you let it leak and use the wrong stuff to stop the leak.

But, the first thing to leak is the plenum area at the kick panels. There's no drain from the factory and it fills up with dirt, leaves, etc. This is the rust that you see on the inside of the cab at the vent doors. It is the most common source of water leaking into the cab.

But, because of this situation on my '69, the P.O. used some non-automotive silicone sealant, which reacted with the steel (over several years) and caused some serious cancer. He started daubing the stuff anywhere he figured the water might come in. He put a ring of it around the wiper motor mounting (and the wiper motor ass'y fell into the cab), as well as built a dam with the sealant in the area over the heater/ac box on the firewall.

Here's a pic. Don't use the wrong silicone sealant. This is the result.

Re: Where is the rain coming in ?

if it is the windshield those are easy to replace the gasket.. i took a box cutter knife and cut my old gasket to get the windshield out.. then you fit the knew one on the windshield while its sitting on the saw horses or something then set windshield on truck then on inside use like a 90* bend and pull the gasket threw.... just my .02

Thanks for the tips. I have insurance for the windshield with a 50.00 deductible and I also bought the chrome/aluminum insert that goes in the gasket. I will leave it to the pros to install the gasket and moulding.

No I just finished 4, 12 hour nite shifts in a row and have a busy weekend ahead. I'll be parking the truck for the season in a month or so and will check it out before I park it. I 'm gonna take the truck apart in the next year anyway as I just ordered the bedstrips and bolt kit from Mar-K. I have have an ECE rear gas tank to install and buckets with the integrated shoulder belts and console from a 2003 Chev truck. I've planned to go to California this October for the Pomona Swap Meet and want to stop at ECE on the way home and pick up carpet, a 3 1/2 5 drop kit and inner fenders for the box.
