87 crew cab shortbed dually
ok fellows been a member for a while an this is my first build trhead on here. i have a 87 crewcab shortbed dually. i bought the truck last year when i got my taxes back so it allready had some work done it had been fourlinked an bagged but no comp or anything just some shrader valaves an airline an bags. so jump forward a year i have takeing an cut the truck down an made a crewcab short bed dually. i love duallies but dont really care for a long bed soi fixed that. i just got my 3inch drop spindles in an installed about a week ago an started the z on the frame the other day im not a very good welder but im learning. im also going to do a stock floor body drop but in instead of cut the top down im going to shave the bottom off the frame. i plan to runa set of alcoa classic 22.5 shaved down on this truck. i will move the truck with a 6.2 diesel an a 700r4 tranny. when im done this will be my daily driver so got to make sure everything is done right an strong.here are some pics for everyone to check out. also if you look on dually scene.com in the project under construction under the title super dooper dually you will find the build on this truck from start to finish.this is what it lloked like when i got except it had no motor or bed when i got it.
well i got it home an this is what i found some nice dents an a hole in the roof an the new roof i installed |

Re: 87 crew cab shortbed dually
an here is a pic after i cut a shortened the chassis mind you nothing is bolted down right now
im in the process of z'ing the frame so be kind on the critisim of the welds but advice is always welcome. when im done this will all be plated in with a peice of 1/4" plate an probly be boxed back to the rear spring hangers these lower spring mounts are keeping me from laying out so i have to re work te lower control arms. i plan to take a peice of 8 inch pipe an recess it into the arm in order to drop the bag down almost 3 inches stay tuned for further up dates im working on the z now as much as i can to get it done but the heat is working against me. |

Re: 87 crew cab shortbed dually
im useing a miller stick welder i think i could probly do better with a tig welder but my welding is getting a little better but just not pretty. i used to be real good with a stick welder but that was 15 years ago an i hadnt really touched on since then. my biggest problem is getting started with the rod once i get started i can usually go on with it.but any advice is welcome. an thanks for checking out my build

Re: 87 crew cab shortbed dually
an old school stick huh? i love a stick. first, make sure you have a good ground. second, remove any old paint on the area to be welded, third, be sure you have the welder turned up high enough so that you get a good penetration, when you strike an arc do it just as you would strike a match. what kind of pattern are you using while running a bead? what rod are ya using? what amperage have you been running it at?

Re: 87 crew cab shortbed dually
thankyou everyone for the comments.
an for the welding i been run the welder at 100 amps an grinding everything pretty good to start with. an the pattern i been useing i been experimenting with circle pattern,a zig zag pattern an a c shapped pattern.an i tink its a 70 18 rod or either a 60 11 not sure an i think its a 1/8" rod or something like that i would have to look at the box. but it all just mainly comes from me being rusty on my welding skills. when i was in high school shop class i used to get straight a's on all my welding an the other guys would come to me to weld stuff for them so they could get a good grade. also i been trying the match trick but i just got to get in the grove of where to strike the arc but atleast my eyes have adjusted to where i can see out of the helmet to be able to see what im working on. |

Re: 87 crew cab shortbed dually
diesel wrencher yeah i had a good start thats why i bought the truck cause i gave 1200 for it i asked a buddy of mine that builds show trucks an stuff an asked him if i brought the truck to him to have the rear suspension done how much would it be an he said it would be between 2 or 3 tousand. so that maid up my mind right then so i got in the truck an drove about 6 or 7 hours to pittsburg an brought it back on a u haul tow dolly. so you see where i have brought the truck to now. its just hard not haveing any income comeing in. i really need to find a new job. but in the mean time i guess i will keep burning myself with the welder. well either way i would be burning myself with the welder. and in the end i can say i built it. and gray harville i had a buddy of mine come by an look at it an he said i was getting good penetration on the welds but the just wont pretty

Re: 87 crew cab shortbed dually
well as long as your gettin good penetration thats all that matters, i would hate for your frame to break. hah, i would use a 6011 theyre easy to lay beads and would work well on the thick metal of the frame. by the way I LOVE YOUR TRUCK! just thought id let ya know. lol
