Flywheel question

I'm putting a 4 speed in my 67, I'm going from the TH 400. A flywheel from a 402 came with the parts truck I'm getting the 4 speed from. Will the 402 flywheel work on my 327? I've looked it up on some sites for a new one, and it shows the same part #. I've asked a few guys locally and have got mixed answers, so I'm asking here now.

Re: Flywheel question

I am not sure, but I know for sure a flywheel for a 350 will fit a 454. It did when we did the swap from a '70 350 to a '73 454 in my '71 C-10.

It'll fit, yes, but the 454 is an externally-balanced engine. Using a flywheel designed for an internally-balanced (or "neutral-balanced" as they are sometimes called) engine like a 350 is a recipe for a very shaky engine.*

*Obviously the above does not apply if the 454 has been converted to internal balance.

On topic, a 402 flywheel will bolt & function just fine on a 327. The only Chevy engines that need a special flywheel are the 400 & the 454.

Re: Flywheel question

Thanks CE20934, that makes my swap much easier. I've got everything I need to do it without having to spend any money! Now all I need to find is the time

You're welcome. FWIW, I'm running a 14" 168-tooth 350 flywheel on my 427.

Speaking of time, it took me almost two years to do my swap. Gotta make sure everything fits right.

I just checked my parts records and darn if I didn't get a flywheel for a 454 when we did the engine swap from the 350 to a 454.

Sorry for the mis-information on my previous post.

Thank you for correcting me.

Danny

ALL TRUE & GOOD ADVICE. YOU TEND TO SEE SO MUCH WRONG ADVICE ON THIS FOURUM. (PROBABLY EVERY FOURUM, I JUST HAPPEN TO FREQUENT THIS ONE) (THIS ISN'T DIRECTED AT YOU SHYGUY SO PLEASE DON'T TAKE OFFENCE) I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE GIVE INCORRECT ADVICE TO A NEWBEE SEEKING SOME GUIDANCE & USEFUL KNOWLEDGE. IT REALLY MAKES THE ANSWERER LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT TO ANYONE WHO KNOWS. ANYONE CAN MAKE AN HONEST MISTAKE, BUT YOU SEE THE SAME PEOPLE, GIVING BULLSH!T ADVICE ON SUBJECTS THAT THEY HAVE ZERO EXPERIANCE ON. I TRY TO GIVE ADVICE ON THINGS THAT I'VE ACTUALLY DONE, OR HAVE READ ABOUT & CAN PROVE. THE LAST THING A PERSON SEEKING ADVICE NEEDS IS WRONG ADVICE,OR OPINIONS OR RUMOURS. COME ON GUYS.. CUT IT OUT. JOHN (I TEND NOT TO GIVE ADVISE ON WOMEN OR MARRIAGE CAUSE I DON'T SEEM TO BE VERY GOOD OR KNOWLEDGABLE ON THE SUBJECT )

Re: Flywheel question

CE20934 gave the correct information. Just to clarify his post it is the 400 small block and the 454 big block that are externally balanced.

Re: Flywheel question

Thanks to all of you, I appreciate it. I'm not exactly a newby to these old Chevy trucks, just have strayed to working on blue oval products the last few years. So I've forgotten alot of information I used to take granted, the old use it or lose it thing ya know!
