Starter hanging up?

My truck starts great every time, but usually it makes a loud whirring sound right after the engine starts. I am assuming that the starter doesn't disengage right away? What can I do to fix this? Is the starter on it's way out?

When you start the truck does it make any unusual noises?

I would pull the starter and look at the teeth on the drive.

You could take it to a place like Auto Zone or O'Riellys and have them check it. When they are testing it you could watch to see if the gear retracts.

I am not a starter kind of guy myself, hopefully some one else will chime in.

No, it doesnt grind or anything while cranking, but when the engine catches it just makes that whirring sound like the flywheel catches the drive gear and spins it faster when i let off the key...

The starter drive has a one-way clutch which is supposed to prevent this, but from your description it sounds like it's not releasing properly. Despite the way it sounds, this is bad only if it is actually overspeeding the starter. To be on the safe side you could replace the drive. Most parts stores carry them.

It needs a shim or two between the starter and the block, it's too tight. If my memory serves me there should be .039 thousands clearance between starter drive and flywheel.
