Upgrading seats ... need seat tracks.

Hey gang,
I picked up this 60/40 seat from a 92 ext cab a couple of weeks ago. Finally got around to working on them today.

The seat mounts from the 92 definitely won't work so I cannibalized the seat tracks off my bench seat and mounted them to the drivers seat. The left track mounts fine of course and the right track will bolt in the rear ok but the front needs a bracket to support it since the floor pan drops. I have a bracket roughed out but still need to fine tune it and get it bolted down.
(sorry, didn't take any pics yet.... tomorrow)

My challenge now is that I'm looking for a set of tracks for the passenger side. Bench seat tracks will be fine. Bucket seat tracks might work better but I figure they will be harder to find.

I'm going to call around to some salvage yards tomorrow. Don't know of any Pick-n-pulls nearby.

TIA
Steve

check with texassquarebodies on this board in the for sale section...im doing the same thing...and i also need the brackets...i may use a piece of angle iron to bridge across and use the bench seat tracks i bought another pair. If trimmed right it should be a bolt in afair!!!!

That angle iron idea sounds interesting. It would make it easier to keep everything level and simpler than making brackets. I'll have to eye that up when I get home tonight. The only other gotcha I've seen is that the rear mount for the passenger seat will have to be modded. the floor pan is lower toward the middle in the rear than on the ends where the mounts usually bolt.

May have to do the angle iron on the rear as well. If you use the original bolt holes to mount the angle iron then the angle to mount the seats would be correct as well

Re: Upgrading seats ... need seat tracks.

Well I finally got the seats installed. I had a couple issues to solve but nothing major. First off, the seat tracks/brackets from the 92 just won't fit. Too tall, they put my knees about horn level.

I decided to use the tracks off my bench seat. The first step was to mount the tracks. The newer tracks have 2 mounting points and the bench tracks have 3. I bolted the outside track hole where the original track mounted. Drilled a hold for the inside mounting point and bolted it up. Next problem was that the track extended under the cushion which put it about 3/4" above the mounting plate in the front. I picked up some 3/4" square stock from Lowes, and used it as a spacer. Drilled down through the Track, stock, seat and bolted it down.

Of course, I needed a second set of tracks and I found some at the junk yard of an 86. I got lucky cause the 79 tracks have the lever on the left side and the 86 tracks have the lever in the front. Makes it nice to slide the passenger seat.

Next issue was mounting the seat to the truck. The outside tracks bolted right up. I had to make a bracket for the front of the right track on the drivers seat, and brackets for front and back on the passenger seat left side. I got some flat steel stock from Lowes for this also. Basically I just took some rough measurements, eyeballed what I needed and started bending the steel. I only have a bench vice and a BIG hammer so it was a bit noisy at times.

Drivers Seat Bracket

Passenger Seat Brackets

Finally Done.

The one thing that didn't work out was the cable on the passenger seat that releases the seat forward when the seat back is folded down. The cable for this was broken and the seat tracks weren't setup right either. Nothing major.

looks good! mine were just mounted on a set of brackets from the conversion seats (the buckets with the folding center console) and worked great!
