Just got back from Pa. visiting my brother and his new wife. Looking to do a little wheeling and dealing, I was on the hunt for a trannie for the SWB. My sister-in-law's uncle ends up giving me (free) a TH350C in need of a rebuild. Unfortantely, it is a long tail. I know this has been covered before but, I believe I will need a short tail in my truck. Is this true and should I trade this for a short tail?

The 350 nonlocking trAnny that came out of my dads truck had 9" long tail on it if that helps any

either will work but the driveshaft will have to be correct for the application

My truck came with a 350 longtail and to swap to a th400 I had to move the crossmember back and get the one piece driveshaft lengthened 3 3/4" for the 400 to work.

I have the shorter one in my swb and the long one is usually on a long box with 1 pc dr.shaft from what I,ve seen on my stuff

Thanks guys. You have been a big help. I need to go to the pick and pull and grab a new trannie crossmember anyway so, I will check and see if they have a short bed up there with a long tail and measure the drive shaft. I have a feeling I may swap this for a short tail

my dad has an 84 c10 swb right now that has a long tail th350 non lockup, and we had a 76 with a 3 speed on the column(manual and it was the same size as a th350 short tail, so again either would work just need the driveshaft to fit said trans. to use and maybe move crossmember.

I guess now is the time to decide whether I stay with an automatic or convert it to manual and throw the Saginaw out of my 68' Camaro in there. Too many decisions and not enough money. I know it's probably going to cost more to rebuild that Saginaw than trading this long tail for a short tail and having it rebuilt

Imho the Saginaw would not be ideal for a truck. My 86 swb came with a th350c longtail and it made the swap to a 700r4 easy and driveshaft did not have to be changed.

Thanks HOGDADDY. I have the drivetrain out of an Olds Omega in the truck right now. The PO torched the cross member to make it fit (Olds 260 & TH200). It sit back about 1" from where it should be. I may just use the long tail to avoid myself some problems

the sgainaw should be the exact same length overall and same driveshaft as a short tail th350. As for having a truck with a short tail trans. and wanting to put in a long tail you can have the ds cut and re balanced, shouldn't cost more then a hundred bucks, or find one in a junkyard for cheap.

Since the th350c needs to be rebuilt, you could have the tail shaft and tail housing swapped during the rebuild.

Local shop can do the rebuild in 24 hours with a new torque converter for $ 500. They will give me a one year warranty on it. I may just get the drive shaft cut down & balanced for another $ 50 bucks. I guess I need to save up some money but, paying for daycare for my girls is the top priority right now

They will give me a one year warranty on it. I may just get the drive shaft cut down & balanced for another $ 50 bucks.
