67 327 Question?

I am about to start another restoration on a 67 ShortWide pickup. I have the original engine with only 46K on it. I am wanting to make this thing into a little screamer and was looking for suggestions on how to liven this thing up. I know its a large journal 327 that originally ran about 260HP. I would like this thing to be in the 400HP range when I get done with it. I have even thought about putting a 283 Crank in this thing with a fairly tight top end. Is that a fairly common thing to do to these 327's? I would like to keep it normally aspirated with no forced air. I would also like to say that my pockets are not bottomless. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

i have a 327 out of a vette and bored it out, cam it, get the right set of heads, flat dome pistons and put a 4-barrel carb on it and you should be good

CollinH,
I think I found the set of heads I want to use, they are called fast burn heads and are newer heads that handle the Unleaded gas we burn now. I am going to put a set of flat tops in it, and I need to find a vortec intake manifold to bolt on top. Thanks for the info.

Re: 67 327 Question?

I agree with the above. bump the compression to around 10:1, get the best heads you can afford, throw a hot cam in it, slap an intake on and that should get you in the 400 hp neighborhood.

Re: 67 327 Question?

I thought the large journal 327 didn't come out until 69? (make sure of what it is)
Also curious about a flat dome piston?
Best advice is some good heads... unless you want to spend lots of money.

Re: 67 327 Question?

327 stopped in either 67 or 68 thats when they started using 350 alot more..

why are you wondering about the flat top pistons??

and vortec heads are perfect for your engine

to much stuff,
I thought the same thing and a friend of mine thats fairly versed in this says he thought that the Large Jorunal Came out in 1968. That being said I ran the number on the block and it said in the description that its a large journal engine. I will know exactly what I have when I open the bottom end of this thing here in the near future. A friend of mine sent me a link to the heads and Flat Tops he suggested to us and I will post it in a little bit.

Re: 67 327 Question?

I run a 68 327 bored over 0.030 with KB hperuertic 10:1 pistions, Comp Cams 280/480 with beehive springs, GM fast burn heads, Edlebrock Performer intake, Q-jet, HEI, and headers. Comp Cams simulator says 400 hp. I run the Tremec 600 with 3.43 12 bolt rearend and my seat of the pants agreee with 400 hp and I get 18 mpg, 16 mpg now with AC on.

Re: 67 327 Question?

Remember this, there's no replacement for displacement. Put a 3.75 stroke crank in it and make it a 383 if it is indeed a large journal block.
