stepside box mounting??

When you cut the frame from a LWB to SWB do you have to change the mounting location?\

I got a fuelcell guy tank and the filler tube goes right over the rear mounting hole for the box on the frame. I have looked at other guys tank mounting and the rub marks on the frame from the box are ddifferent then mine... how do I move the box brace for mounting??

Re: stepside box mounting??

I have a 72 short bed step side with a wood floor and Blazer style fuel tank.
I’ve seen where others have removed the sill or cut it short (not as tall) to clear everything but I wanted to have as much floor support as possible so I’m adding a short sill forward of the fuel tank and made a custom support to go over the fuel tank. You can see the concept on my build (post # 106) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=318544&page=5 and (post #301) http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...318544&page=13 Maybe this will give you an idea on how to solve your problem. I’m not familiar with a fuelcell guy tank so I can’t be sure if moving the sill is possible and am not sure about relocating the mounting locations after you cut your frame from a LWB to SWB

Re: stepside box mounting??

Looking at your pictures it looks to me that the cross sill was sitting right where the filler tube is. If you looked at mine the cross sill was over the two elongated holes just forward of your position. So moving your cross sill forward would clear your filler tube and your tank doesn’t look like it sticks up past the frame rail but you might consider using some ¼ inch rubbers mounting pads at all the mounts to give a little clearance.

Also two questions you might want to check on. Is the fuel line going to clear the new cross sill location can’t be sure by the picture? Looking at the bottom picture it appears to me that there’s a short cross sill mounted just forward of the main cross sill on a plywood floor, will the short sill clear your fuel sending unit that sticking up above the frame?

I don’t know how much room you have to get your hand inside the frame rail with the tank installed to put a washer and nut on the bed bolt when installing the bed. One possible solution you might consider is to drill a large enough hole for a washer, nut, and socket to pass thru the bottom frame rail at the new cross sill location.

That looks like a nice fuel tank, good luck on your build, hope the information is useful to you
