1972 Chevy 4x4

How is a 1972 Chevy 4x4 in the snow? I am close to finishing my 1968 Chevy truck and I have been wanting a 4x4. Rather than buying a newer one I have been thinking about doing another 67-72 Chevy truck. My preference is a 1972 Cheyenne Super with a big block. What are all your opinions?

Re: 1972 Chevy 4x4

Up until a few years ago, that was pretty much what i drove. 70 with a 402, good mud tires, and a posi in the rear. Truck was great until i wore it out. Heater is good and a manual choke helps on the cold starts. I would say go for it, but don't make it so nice you don't want to use it... I can't count the rockers, boxes, doors etc i have replaced over the years. Bought it in 1990 and retired in 05.

I am continually amazed at how good they are in the snow. I have pulled many a newer rig out that got itself in trouble. Usually that is more the a driver issue though.

I am going to keep an eye out for a suitable 1972 Cheyenne Super 4x4. I even plan on putting a snow plow on it. There is no sense to spend $30,000+ for a newer truck that isn't as durable as the older ones.

One could argue that a 1/2 ton 67-72, with solid front axel is better than modern 1-tons when you attach a plow. A farmer I know hates the new style CV joint front ends for his heavy farm truck needs.

Note that the factory never made a big block 72. You have to make that mod yourself.

I toss 500 pounds of sand tubes in the bed when I have the 400-500 pounds of plow, frame, and pump on the front.

My friend's '07 GMC is a great pulling rig. We use it to pull fish houses around all winter. But when the snow gets really deep we use my truck with a set of chains on the front.

My truck in action...

Check bismanonline.com. I was on there a couple nights ago, and I seen a few under the Classics section.

Mine is great in the snow, you have to be more carefull with a short bed, they want to do a 180 if you're not carefull! My blazer really likes to do 180s when I go to fast!
