7? Cheyenne Super 10

Since I got my old beater, my dad has been constantly talking about his old "yeller" truck. I am on the prowl for one now to make a clone.... Wanted to toss up the one and only photo I've been given (mom snuck it to me), see if anyone could assist with a year on it. Photo is dated 1977, April. Makes me 6 years old in the photo.

Dad bought it when it was a fairly new truck, claims it had "1000 miles on it", newest truck he'd ever owned. It had been smashed in the front, he bought it as a salvage and rebuilt it. He had always done builders, we never owned cars unless they had been wrecked. He'd work at which ever shop he was employed at during the days, and then come home and work on his own stuff every night and weekend. Fix 'em, drive 'em, sell 'em, rinse and repeat sorta thing.

He kept this one for 3 years though, about the longest he ever owned a vehicle. Claimed it would run up to the 100mph mark on the speedo, and then wrap back around to about 20mph before stopping the climb in speed. I am going to go through more photo albums tomorrow, mom said there are some shots of the truck being repaired, hoping to get one of the grille/front end to help me sort out a year model.

Only thing that really helps me is the fender emblem, via a magnifying glass I can clearly make out Cheyenne super 10 (73-76 I think). Thought maybe someone else might notice something to give a clue. I'm leaning to '75, but could be a '76.

Anyways, everyone enjoys photos. Even if it is a picture of a photo (will scan tonight hopefully). Only truck I've ever known him to have a set of aftermarket wheels on too. Spot light, whip antennas..... breaker breaker one nine!

It is either a 1973 or 1974 chevy dropped the cheyenne super trim level name after '74.Looks like it was a nice truck though.there is no real way to tell the difference in the years other than to have the vin and decode it or check with your pops and see if he recalls what year it is.

Doesnt appear to have drip rail moldings on the cab . Maybe 73 since they were starting to realize they were necessary in 74 and 75.73 did not come with them .

I can make out a drip rail chrome molding in the real photo here. I think. I'm really hoping to get more photos tomorrow. I know what I'm asking for is like asking someone to I.D. a car with a piece of tire. But then again, lot of smart people on these forums.

Dad seems to think it was a 75, but of course he's old and can't really remember what he got for his last birthday let alone the year of this old truck. I'd bet he has had close to 30 trucks since that one.

It looks like it was a Cheyenne Super, not just a Cheyenne. Anyhow, the fender emblems put it at either '73 or '74. They changed the look of the emblems in '75.

I had that almost exact truck about 5 years ago. I sold it to a buddy, and it got thieved from the transmission shop.

73-4 had a fender emblem with a graphic of some sort at the end in a square box, right? And 75 they changed it to say "10" at the end of Cheyenne super. At least I think that is what I've learned with a bit of research today.

I really thought 73 and up had drip rails though. 73's having no drip rail molding is a new one on me, but I don't doubt it one bit. I am very anxious to get my hands one some photo albums tomorrow.

That is a 73/74, it has amber front markers. My 73 is a Cheyenne Super. I also don't see a drip rail...which leads me to believe it is a 73.

In the real photos, I can make out a chrome drip rail molding. The fact I'm having to take a photo of a photo... is distorting a 30 year old photo even more. So I'm guessing with a drip molding, with the amber park lamps and this smaller/closer square design grille, it's a 74 for sure? Looks like in 75 they put clear park lamps and it had a different grille in it.

Thanks again guys for helping. Now I just hope i can find something worth building. Wanting to at least get the correct color interior. I can change the color(s) of a vehicle, but when you get to the interior pieces and seatbelts and all that, just easier to have it somewhat what you want already.

Also found some photos of an 83/84 model he built. I actually remember it. He cussed it for the 305 all the time.

With that grille and drip rails its got to be a 74.

I can see why it was bought as a prior salvage.....OUCH!

With most of what he got being only a few years old, some of them were really borderline totals. Even though he just did them in his shop at home, he did work in a real body shop and had access to real frame equipment and such. So at least they were fixed correctly. Back then, you could get a salvage titled vehicle, fix it, take it to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Inspection station and let them inspect and verify repairs. Once that was done, clean title.

Of course now a days, if you were driving a 74 chevy pickup and got hit, if it just needed a bumper they'd total it.
