Steering wheel can be adjusted closer or farther away!

My friend collects old caddies and I was sitting in one the other day and playing with the levers on the column. It had standard tilt but it also has a lever that let's the driver pull the wheel closer or push it farther away. I have never seen one before and am wondering if I could modify the column for use in my 68.

Its called telescopic steering. Not sure if you could modify it to your truck.

You can do this to your truck column, but it's "permanent."

There's an FAQ on it.

IIRC, a Board member installed a telescoping steering column out of an Olds. I seem to remember it worked but the mechanism broke shortly after and he went back to stock.

T-bird one is called a "fat man column" I believe. The tilt/telescope came in some 60's Olds also. I found one at PAP and narrowed it down to a '67 Toronado. It could be modified to fit.

Great info, thanks. I am not sure of the year but will find out. Using one would let me maintain a perfect fit as I grow older and fatter.

And while you're at it find a seat out of a 59 or 60 Chrysler Imperial. The one that swivels out when you open the door. Super easy. Sit down swivel in under your new tilt telescopic wheel. Can't get better than that. LOL!!!! JK

Re: Steering wheel can be adjusted closer or farther away!

Mid 70's GM cars had an option for a swivel seat also.

yep, my uncle's 75 442 Cutlas had the swivel buckets and a factory p.a. system. woohoo!

the t-bird column was listed on the option packages as "swing-away-column". don't think it would be listed on the option sheet as "fat-man-column"....... probably wouldn't have sold I imagine..

I had a '75 Monte Carlo with swing-out buckets. Quite frankly I never used them once in a useful manner. Cute idea though.

I added tilt (or am about to) because of the stock wheel being in such an annoying location, so I can sympathize. My concern with the mod to shorten it is how much, if at all, it compromises the safety feature of collapsing.

Not that collapsing a steering column with your face or chest is going to make for a good day, but I've lost friends ('65 Falcon) to cars without collapsing wheels.

Re: Steering wheel can be adjusted closer or farther away!

Most all Caddies has the Tilt/Tele column through the 70'and into the 80's as well as the Corvette like stated above they were available through the same time frame. I just realized a lot of people on here don't remember cars back that far. That makes me feel old. The Swing away was also an option on the Mustang /Mercury[cougar the same as mustang with different tail and grille]

Re: Steering wheel can be adjusted closer or farther away!

And here I thought a telescoping column was a "new thing!" Nice.

The only problem I have with my steering wheel (aside from UV rays) is that the PO had the seat overpadded and the wheel rubs my thighs! Heck, it did that when I was 16 and 60 pounds lighter.

Re: Steering wheel can be adjusted closer or farther away!

To do this basically you loosen your column and collapse the intermediate shaft some and the column will go "closer" to the dash panel. just like in the pics above effectively shortening the column. Jim
