Well as most of you know I'm planning a trip to Texas to get some parts with my 22 foot 12,000# tag trailer. My ??? is I'm going down I-35 through Ks, Okla. and Texas, all turnpike. Do I have to worry about getting checked or stopped and weighed when I cross state lines. A guy I know said I had to have a log book, med. card and other stuff. The truck and trailer is all legal with lights and brakes. Just curious if I would have any trouble. I'm going to be hauling 2 cabs, bed, 4 doors, bucket seats, and stuff. Thanks Randy

A CDL is for those who drive for hire, and haul 15+ passengers or weights of 26,001 lbs and up. As long as you are legally licensed, and your trailer is properly licensed, and your lights are working, etc., etc., you shouldn't have any problems.

i don't know about the midwest but in washington anything over 10,000 gvw has to stop at state scales,but thats only for commercial vehciles.if your useing your own pickup i wouldn't worry about,if you get pulled over don't say you are hualing stuff for other people say it is all yours.when you say your for hire that when all that stuff that crews went threw comes into effect. hope this helps any doubt call your local state patrol or commercial weight enforcement office.

I used to drive truck for a living. I'm not sure about having to stop at scales with a personal vehicle and trailer, this area is kinda fuzzy about that part. You shouldn't need to worry about carrying the comic book since you're not hauling commercially. You're GVW is light enough that you shouldn't have any trouble. I'd check with all the state DOT regulations, I've heard that since I quit driving, TX has adopted City DOT officers, with different rules and such from state and federal (the want to scrape up all the money they can)

As long as you are "NOT FOR HIRE", you should not have a problem. Most of the time at the scales there are, Old guys they do not know what to do with facing retirement or rookies, both trying to impress each other; neither of which has any idea of what is going on.

Thanks guys for the info. Barn9 I think its going to be a quick trip. Leave on Friday the 14th get to North of Dallas at some of my wifes friends place. Then head to Lone Oak early Sat morn. Load up and try to get back on road by noon or 1 and try to make it make to Wichita on Sat night. Unload a cab and doors there and head it on back home on Sunday. That way Sunday isn't a long drawn out day. Thanks Randy

Randy, these guys are giving some good advice. You will be driving a private vehicle under 26K. Same rules as hauling a boat or camper. You don't have to stop at scales or ports of entry. Don't exceed 3 mph over in Oklahoma

, and if you get stopped by Barney Fife play stupid

and say it all belongs to you.

I hauled a '72 Cutlass convertible and a bunch of extra parts from Houston to Lawrence, KS a couple years ago. Pulled the trailer with my '72 1/2 ton. Didn't have any problems. Did some late night driving though (12-3 AM). I think the some of the big truckers are looking for some entertainment or whatever to keep them awake. Had a few flash their lights signaling that it was ok to pull back into the right lane after I passed them. I wouldn't guess that you will have any problems hauling stuff that is "all yours".
