Need help quick guys

ok im painting my cab and i got evey thing primered except for the floor but the floor is ready for primer so what i want to do is paint the interior then the door jams on both sides then paint the door jams (on the door) then the back of the door and install it without scratching anything then paint the whole out side of the cab but my dad says he wants to drill holes in the door hinge and thruoghthe cab but the bracket on the inside is in the way so that wont work im not woried about lining it up with the cab im woried about scratching the truck so what should i do

Why does he want to drill holes in the door hinge? Is it for a wire or switch? When I painted mine recently I painted the entire interior including the jambs, I masked the outside about 1/16th into the jamb all the way around the lower half. I painted the underside of the gutter and masked it on the top side. I also masked the front gutter at the seam where it connects to the gutter over the door. When I painted the outside I masked the opposite. I dont know if that helps? I painted mine with the doors on and got really good coverage everywhere, even on the hinge end of the door. Like you I didnt want to chance scratching anything by mounting the door after painting. I would have had to mount the door by myself, you're lucky, you have some help! Either way, Good luck! Aaron

Drilling a small hole thru the hinges makes it easier to line up the doors when re-installing.

exactly what my dad thinks but if he drills the holes he will hit the braket inside with the threads i told him we should just paint the door jambs on the cab and on the door and then tape towls and blankets on to the cab and put the door on then bolt it losely to the cab then line it up then tighten the bolts take the blankets and towels off but he doesnt want to also its my truck so dont you guys think i have a little say in it

Align the door or hood and bolt it down.Drill a hole thru the hinge and mounting surface.Remove to paint or whatever.When reinstalling put a pin(nailor something thru the hole.When you bolt it down it's atomatically back where it was when aligned.

Wish I knew about the drilling a small hole trick. I had a real bear of a time "aligning" my doors. I'm still not satisfied and I had put in alot of time into it. The factory did it better than me! Any yes, I did scratch my paint in few places. I even tried aligning the doors with out the fenders on. i finally got disgusted and said good enough for me and gave up!

Good luck! How did the paint come out and what method did you use to align the doors.

Ditto. I marked around my hinges with a sharpie when I removed the driver door, but because the hinge edges are rounded, the sharpie marks will only get you back to approximate - not perfect. I chipped the paint at the front door edge to fender gap readjusting it... at least five times before it was right again.

Drilling a witness hole would have saved me a lot of swearing and kicking at the cat. Good thing the cat's faster than my foot.

Ok, dumb question for you 67 chevy 1 series - when I read your post, you only mention putting the doors back ON - are they already removed? The whole point of drilling the guide hole is to do so before the doors are off - so that you can put them back exactly where they were during reassembly and avoid the problems hoodlum and domeier had with theirs.

So, if your doors are still on, by all means drill a SMALL hole in the hinge (it doesn't have to go all the way thru the bracket behind, it just has to be able to hold the drill bit you just used and have it reinserted to help guide the door back into position).

If your doors are off, then you have to align them anyway, no point in drilling now. (UNLESS, you want to reinstall while in primer - align, THEN drill, then remove them again and paint them off the truck and then reinstall. This might be worth it if you are worried about scratching things up - because it will ease the re-install process when all done, less chance to bang the door on the fenders fiddling with re-alignment).

As always though, line your door and fender edges with blue or green painter's tape, maybe 2 layers, in order to help minimize dinging the new paint when you reinstall the doors.
