Tune up cost - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok, so I was looking under the hood and was just checking to see how easy it will be to do the tune up myself and realized I have a huge snake pit in there. I cannot even see the plugs on the left side of the engine let alone get to them. The PO had said that his dad added something to make it haul better but I wasn't paying attention as I was planning on going over the whole thing myself but now time is not free anymore. I need a tune up to pass smog and was wondering what would be a good price to get it done at a shop. Most places just list $69.99 to start but I know it won't be that amount. It looks like a lot will need to be disconnected to reach the plugs, plus I want wires, cap, rotor, air filter and they will charge more for that.

I have no problem buying the parts first then taking it in, but a old friend told me that a lot of places don't like that as they make more on ripping you off for parts than the labor so they don't install parts you bought yourself.

Also, does anybody in the Victorville, CA area know of a good shop to go to? I just moved up here 3 years ago and never had to take a car anyway yet and don't know any shops.

I am a little confused because generally doing a tune up in these trucks are pretty easy. The only problem ive had is reaching everything. Maybe a pic will help us with what your against?

holllyyyyyyyy----cow! that's a mess! LOL,

Take a look at the hose connections and see if you can take them off. Generally the passenger side is easy as pie! I think once you get that air cleaner off it might help. hopefully someone here with a better idea what can be moved or not will chime in. but it is doable, and once you get access to the plugs, your probably wish you didn't pay someone $70 bucks to do it.

Give it another 24-48 hours and if no one comes up, post this in the engine/drive train section. or better yet, have one of the mods move it. that's the "correct" way to do it.

My neighbor came over today and said that taking the air cleaner off may help some. But I think I'll still be about 8 inches thick of hoses away. We'll see. I'll dive into it soon. I'm giving it a second thought about paying someone as I am a cheap ass.

I hope ya know I was kidding some. But yeah I am glad to hear your doing it your self. You would have regretted paying someone I am sure. Ive never seen the air injection stuff. You have any more pics of the truck? It looks pretty nice!
