Strange noises coming from rear-end
now all joking aside i hear strange noises while driving my '70 gmc. First noise is when i get on it or off the throttle. it clunks. now im pretty sure its the u joints and im not all to worried about it.
the second noise is more of a chatter. almost like a hollow pipe slapping against something. i only get this noise when down shifting or coasting down a hill. My dad is a tech and owns his own shop. Rather than asking him i wanna figure it out my self Gotta make him proud. any help would be great thanks! |

Re: Strange noises coming from rear-end
Carrier bearing is a support bearing midway (lengthwise) on a two-piece driveshaft.
But it could easily be bad u-joints.

Grab your driveshaft and try to rotate it and move it back in forth. Any play at all and it's time for new U-joints. Also check for a bad carrier bearing as suggested. While your back there, check the rear for leaks and check the fluid level. Might be a good idea to change it too, it could have been a looooooong time since it was done last.

Re: Strange noises coming from rear-end
Climb underneath, Grab your shaft and yank it...
Seriously, give it a good tug and check for excessive movement... |

Re: Strange noises coming from rear-end
The first clunk, could it maybe be a worn trans mount.
My '86 (automatic) did that and I know for sure the mount was bad. Last edited by Kayotic; 06-21-2010 at 01:02 AM. |

Does it also clunk when hitting bumps? Mine developed a similar noise just today and I'm currently trying to diagnose it as well. It sounds like it's directly under where the cab and bed meet.

Re: Strange noises coming from rear-end
PRETTY GOOD ADVICE. THIS IS COMMING FROM AN OLD FART WHO HAS 3 GROWN BOYS (WELL NOW THERE ALL MEN WITH KIDS OF THERE OWN). I WAS ALWAYS PROUD THAT THEY COULD DIAGNOSE PROBLEMS ON THIER OWN, BUT ESPECIALLY PROUD WHEN THEY WOULD ASK THIER OLD MAN FOR A LITTLE ADVICE OR HELP. SHOOT SOMETIMES THEY STILL DO. (BUT I THINK IT'S FOR MY BENIFIT) JOHN

Re: Strange noises coming from rear-end
My buddy had a '70 that clunked bad when going from forward to reverse and vice versa. Turned out the the big U-bolts that hold the rear to the control arms had rusted. They looked fine where they went over the tubes, but down in the pockets they rusted down to nothing.
He discovered it when one broke on I-95 in heavy traffic and he did a 360.

Re: Strange noises coming from rear-end
Shaky makes a good point.
I have seen that too. The u-bolt worn to nothing inside the pockets. Worth a look also while your under there. |
