clutch pedal
how do i get the clutch pedal out of my 62?

This should help you out. Detach the return spring from the clutch pedal, then remove lever #1, which is mounted on the passenger side of the steering column. Then it's a matter of wiggling the pedal pivot free of the bushings. If your intent is to eliminate the clutch pedal for use with an automatic transmission, you'll want to saw the clutch arm off near the top and reinstall the pin. The clutch pedal pivot pin also supports the brake pedal so it must be in place for the brakes to function.

If your intent is to remove the clutch pedal, the arm will need to be cut off so the upper most piece remains attached to the pin. The pin is staked into the arm and is essentially one piece. If the arm could be removed completely, there would be nothing to keep the pin from sliding out the passenger side of the housing. The clutch pedal arm acts as the head of the pin, limiting movement. Same is true for lever #1. It restrains the pin from moving left. With the lever in place on the right, and the pedal on the left, the pin is trapped in the housing. If either is left off, the pin can work it's way out of the hole.

got ya so undo lever 1 slide the thing out cut pedal and put it all back together.

Yes, it can be done in place if you can block the pedal from moving. A cutoff wheel would be the best solution. If you don't have a compressor, a Dremel tool with a cut off wheel will get the job done easily. The best I've ever found is the Dremel brand EZ Lock. I been using these exclusively for automotive cutting for years.

Several of my friends have just removed the pedal and left item 2 in the diagram in place. the bolt that holds #2 in from the passengers side ensures that #2 wont slide out. I have the clutch out of mine at the moment and everything else seems super solid. I cant see the brake pedal coming out at all. Why would this be a problem to leave it that way?

Looking at the diagram I suppose that would work if the wall thickness on #2 is strong enough, and doesn't rely on #5 for internal support. Also, is #2 mounted solidly to the hanger bracket on the driver side end? It's been too many years since I've seen #2 off the car to remember how strong it is. My mindset has always been overkill when it comes to brakes. Failure at the pivot would not be good, so it never occured to me to just leave out the pin.

If you think #2 needs more support, you could insert a piece of rod the same diameter as #5. However, looking at the drawing, I think the only contact between #2 and #5 is at the bushings #4.
