Need some opinions from carb savvy individuals.

Here is how i screwed up my 85' quadrajet.

While rebuilding my carb i drank way to much and or inhaled way to many gas fumes and i was trying to pull the pin out of the metering rod plunger with a pair of "diagonal side cutters",yea i know. I ended up cutting the rod off the plunger so the plungers can be sucked all the way down.

So I put the carb on the truck, it started but idled extremely high. I removed the step idle rod that kicks up the idle when the choke is on, then i adjusted the linkage screw until the truck was idling at a decent lower rpm.

Now the truck is running, idling but if i hold my finger over the accessory vacuum port it kills out the engine. Im thinking since the carb has no vacuum its not pulling down the metering rods, as soon as im closing the vacuum leak its now pulling down the metering rods i screwed up and starving the engine of fuel.

Does this sounds like the problem?

And i have to add the high idle must have been a vacuum leak and not a problem with the linkage adjustment.
