Can anybody with a manual transmission check?

Does the swivel on the clutch adjustment rod go in the lowest hole of the bell crank ("Z bar") or does it go on the second hole up, which has a raised boss and slightly smaller diameter opening.?
I am working on the clutch adjustment on my 83 C20 with SM 465 manual 4 spd. transmission. The clutch keeps going out of adjustment. There are two holes on the bottom of the bell crank (Z bar). My existing setup has the threaded "lower pushrod" swivel installed on the lowest (furthest down) hole. This results in some "slop" in the swivel which may account for the frequent loss of adjustment. The other hole (higher up) looks like a better match for the stud on the swivel, but it would put the adjustment rod at a sharper angle to the clutch fork.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Re: Can anybody with a manual transmission check?

Thanks BigRed. I wonder what the other hole is for? I have seen it described as a "gage" hole elsewhere.

Re: Can anybody with a manual transmission check?

The other hole should be for a return spring, one end goes there and the other on the frame.

Re: Can anybody with a manual transmission check?

My return spring hooks to a bracket on the clutch fork. Is that an incorrect setup?

Re: Can anybody with a manual transmission check?

It'll work, I've seen them both ways. Some have one spring going from the frame to the fork, others have a spring going from the frame to the z-bar and another from the fork to the z-bar.

Re: Can anybody with a manual transmission check?

Grab yourself a copy of the catalog from Classic Parts. They have a complete diagram in there with all of the parts numbered. This is the diagram I will be following when I order extra parts to complete my swap

Re: Can anybody with a manual transmission check?

Thanks. I am looking at the Classic Parts diagram. Nothing appears to go in that second (highest up) hole in the end of the bell crank. Is that a wave washer between the cotter pin and the flat washer at the end of the bell crank at the swivel attachment? (The catalog just says #22, which is for the whole kit.) Is it: cotter pin, wave washer, flat washer, bell crank OR cotter pin flat washer, wave washer, bell crank? I have no wave washer - maybe that is my problem.

Re: Can anybody with a manual transmission check?

I also see two springs in the Classic Parts diagram: clutch pedal return spring and clutch fork pullback spring. I have the clutch fork pullback spring, but I don't see where the clutch pedal return spring goes. Do you manual transmission guys have two springs? If so, where does the clutch pedal return spring connect. I can't quite make out the attachment points on the drawing. The drawing makes it look like both springs connect to the clutch fork - which can't be right. Thanks.

Re: Can anybody with a manual transmission check?

Maybe you get one or the other, not both. When I disconnected the spring to the clutch fork the clutch pedal dropped to the floor. I disconnected the spring to install a new clutch fork boot. I don't know why you would need two springs in about the same location, as appears to be the case on the Classic Parts drawing.

If you figure it out. Let me know. I know somebody on here is running a SM465 in their rig and can take some pics

Mine has both springs and the small bracket that is bolted to the clutch fork for the spring to attach to.

I can take some pics later today if needed.

Re: Can anybody with a manual transmission check?

Yes, please take pictures and post them. I have the SM465 with the spring on clutch fork bracket to frame, but that appears to be all. Since my clutch keeps going out of adjustment, maybe another spring would help. Also, the correct arrangement of the attachment hardware for the "lower pushrod assembly" (or adjustment rod) would be nice to know: i.e. cotter pin, flat washer, wave washer, bell crank - or whatever the correct sequence is.
Perhaps Keith Seymore can post on this, since he was there in the plant when these trucks were built, and he has a 100% correct specimen to look at.
