Rim stuck to hub.....

Passenger side rear rim won't break loose from the hub! Tried kicking it, 5# sledge, etc.

I was thinking of making a giant puller tool with some angle iron, a threaded bung, and a really long bolt. Aside from that, I am running out of ideas.ANy help?

....oh yeah.....80's 15x8 Blazer Rally rim on a 70 GMC with the stock 12 bolt rear.

Re: Rim stuck to hub.....

I had a rear drum rusted to the hub. I wasn't in a hurry but it took half a dozen tries over a couple of months to get it off. I could not get the puller to hold and ended up spot welding bent flat stock to the drum, torqued it like crazy and after the right mix of penetrant, wd 40, heat, ice and BFH it popped. It sat with pressure on the puller bolt for a couple of weeks. I did not apply a lot of heat, did not want to warp the axle or hub.

Re: Rim stuck to hub.....

Are the lugnuts off?

you could always pull the diff cover, take out the bolt, pin and C-clips and pull the entire axle... then you would avoid more bearing damage...

Dead Blow Hammer (biggest) wd 40 it daily for a week then beat the SH*& out of it. If you use a torch use the rose bud tip and turn it up real real high.

Re: Rim stuck to hub.....

Not just a big dead-blow hammer, but a BIG dead-blow hammer

Something that has worked for me, is simply ramming the stuck wheel/tire with another wheel/tire of similar size.

Re: Rim stuck to hub.....

I did what msgross suggests. I pulled the whole axle and then still had to work a little to get it off, but it sure made life a lot easier.

Re: Rim stuck to hub.....

had the same problem with a 69 nova a just bought not to long ago! we tryed everything other then pulling the axel didnt want to go that far so we backed the lugs nuts off and did a a power brake burn out forward and then in reverse broke it loose! i know this is prolly the most hillbilly redneck solution out there but it worked for me lol

Re: Rim stuck to hub.....

From the other side of the truck slide a 2x4, 2x6 or 4x4 under the truck and whack the back of the rim with it. Its worked well for me, given the weight of the wood and the inertia developed.

Did you back off the brake adjuster? Sometimes that helps. Failing that, empty a couple cans of PB blaster into every crack that goes between the drum and hub.

I used my brain on this one.

I gave it to the shop up the street. Work hours, lack of driveway, garage, and desire make it the wise choice!

That won't help get the wheel off the hub/drum...

Re: Rim stuck to hub.....

loosening the lug nuts a turn and either wiggling the vehicle or driving it around the block has always worked for me on the most stubborn rusted one wheels/drums. just make sure to drive SLOW if you go around the block.

Several days of PB blaster soaking, loose lugs with a drive around the block, and a lot of BFH.
